Such a heartbreaking incident indeed, and it underscores the critical issues faced by pilots at Cathay Pacific. Reports indicate that alongside increased workloads and systemic work pressure, pilots have been dealing with significant changes in pay and benefits. According to the union, these changes have resulted in a pay cut of up to 60 percent during the pandemic, and 25 percent once pilots were back flying. The reduction in the company pension contribution by 35 percent and the slashing of the education allowance by up to 50 percent have added to the challenges.
Moreover, the shift from a guaranteed salary to a flight hours-based system, with a significant portion dependent on 'productivity pay,' has introduced instability. Flight hours, controlled by the company's roster, often lie outside the control of pilots.
It's deeply concerning that many pilots, like the unfortunate individual involved, have expressed feeling 'stuck' in a company where morale is low and the working environment has been described as 'toxic.' During flights, complaints from both aircrew and cabin crew about the company have been all too common.
These issues extend beyond the individuals involved and have broader implications for passenger safety. It's imperative for Cathay Pacific to address these concerns comprehensively and urgently to ensure the well-being of its pilots and, ultimately, the safety of its passengers.

This satire by the Onion has been published 21 times since 2014 - changing only the details of the mass shooting but leaving everything else the same. Including the cycle of despair that follows each one, the multiple calls for gun controls and the ultimate inaction.
