@K80Uva @jackiantonovich Yes! I use a Think-Pair-Share approach first, then I call the whole class back and ask, “Who can tell us something insightful that your partner said?”
Students volunteer someone else’s ideas, which validates listening and collaboration, not individualism and competition.
We are just weeks away from Artemis II, where we will send astronauts around the Moon—farther than any crew has traveled before.

Congratulations to Fr. Greg Boyle, SJ, a wonderful Jesuit priest and founder of @HomeboyInd, who has just been named a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor. Richly deserved for a lifetime of selfless service. AMDG. @FrGregBoyle https://t.co/lpLRWYAbPM
NEWS
Bronx medical school, the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, is now tuition-free thanks to a $1 billion gift from Dr. Ruth Gottesman, a former professor.
Gottesman, whose late husband was an early investor with Warren Buffett, has made it a condition of the gift that the college NOT change its name—an unusual requirement in a world where much smaller gifts often come with the requirement that the colleges be named after the donor.
Most students at the Einstein College of Medicine graduate with $200,000 in debt; they will now be free of that burden.

Interesting mix of praise, criticism, and trepidation from different parties. Who will be impacted the most? How do you measure success of “school safety”? What will schools choose to use funds towards?
Mayor Brandon Johnson supported move and, as was expected, his hand-picked board voted unanimously. Students and some activists hailed the move. However, several alderman and one former board member spoke against it, urging the school board to leave it in the hands of LSCs
Ald. Taliaferro, a former Chicago Police sergeant and chair of the Public Safety Committee, blocks the measure to end the Chicago Public Schools contract with the Chicago Police Department from advancing. It heads to legislative purgatory.
BREAKING: Chicago’s Board of Education voted unanimously on Thursday to remove School Resource Officers from city schools.
The vote was 7-0. https://t.co/y4IxtA3ZpN
@theDRAMAgoat1 Ask parents, “What is one topic that your child can talk endlessly about?” It gives insight into the learner’s personality and passions, which is useful for casual conversation and application to the course of study. I am almost always surprised with parents’ responses!
@JessicaLyleEd@TeachMrReed Yes to this, and I would add: ask the student what grade they believe they earned in the course. Have them support their answer by citing examples of their work that approaches, meets, or exceeds the standards. Conversations are usually insightful and productive!
@JayWamsted On the other hand, I lament that in education, the only way to be 'promoted' is often to leave the classroom. Some can't wait to get through minimal teaching years for a quick promotion, while others of us don't want to stop teaching so are trapped under the classroom ceiling.
Here is s fantastic thread of sources for AP Language students to practice the skill of synthesis and thesis writing on a topic sure to spark conversation: gas vs electric vehicles and the environmental impacts of each.
“Electric cars are still cars. The focus on electric cars stands in the way of truly transformative change: better public transit and better laid-out cities that encourage active modes of getting around, such as cycling.”
Fewer cars, less driving, etc.

Responding with “thoughts and prayers” in the face of perpetual gun violence while we do nothing to prevent it only reveals that we are not actually thinking or praying.
Authentic thinking and praying never leads to apathy in the face of injustice.
It is spiritualizing apathy.
Here’s the Chest X-Ray of a young girl suffering from a condition that is now the #1 cause of death in children and adolescents in the U.S.
What’s the diagnosis?
Today the 41st school shooting of 2022 took place at Ingraham High School, @SeaPubSchools, when 1 person was shot and sustained life-threatening injuries. We continue to advocate to #StopGunViolence in our schools, places where all children have the right to feel safe.
Last August ('21) I posted a Better-Building question for each day of the month. Better begins with a question.
Still asking the same questions.
Still--ever--chasing better.

This! And the fact that pursuing an advanced degree is cost- and time-prohibitive, especially for women who make up a majority of the teaching force, systematically keeps experienced classroom educators out of positions of leadership in schools.
You know what’s garbage? Is that in the education field, if teachers want to move up, they have to go back to school. There’s no on-the-job training and promotion. Not once have I heard a teacher say that their education program accurately prepared them for the job. #teacherprobs
