We are delighted to share our West Coast marine energy research paper in @Nature : we find big performance and cost benefits from the sector.
Thanks to @Dr_PatyHG's amazing team & to @SecGranholm@ENERGY @NREL and @GavinNewsom for your support! @TEToday

@danielkane__ @ioanapatrin I am very late in the game on this, but this calls the need for a tariff structure redesign as we transition into more renewables so we can provide the right incentives to not only minimize emissions but leverage the cheapest electricity from the wholesale electricity market.
Looking to teach the innovators of tomorrow? The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at UC San Diego invites applications for tenure and tenure-track faculty positions. Send in your application here: https://t.co/Gu6PTTjhYm. 🚀
I'm incredibly honored and delighted to be among the 2023 #PackardFellows alongside an outstanding group of early career colleagues. My lab at @UCSDJacobs@ucsd_mae is so excited to develop a new class of acoustoplasmonic #metasurfaces toward next-generation imaging applications!
Great post from John here. People often ask why we focus on DERs exclusively when there are so many other solutions that need support as well.
This dynamic is a great example. DERs challenge the institutional inertia in our energy system more than anything else, and thus constitute the most radical whitespace in the industry.
Here’s an example of how:
Let’s say some aggregated DERs (smart thermostats, EVs, batteries, commercial and industrial loads, etc.) let you turn off the marginal, most-expensive peaker plant during a heat wave.
It’s not just that peaker plant that loses money. Every single other power plant now gets paid less too, since the clearing price is lower.
Similarly, it’s not just those DERs owners who save money. Every other customer in that area saves money too.
That group of DERs have now made power structurally cheaper, not just marginally.
Understandably, there are many stakeholders who don’t like the thought of clearing prices decreasing.
And sometimes, ISOs and regulators are overly sensitive to the interests of those stakeholders.
It's exciting that low inertia systems are finally being made more accessible to the public! @ScienceNews
Check out what Dominic Gross, Julia Matevosyan, @florian_dorfler , Rodrigo Henriquez-Auba, Benjamin Kroposki and I said about it.

Impactful words by @CarolynBertozzi today on how diversity in her trainees enabled creativity, not playing by the rules, and ultimately the work that built the field of bioorthogonal chemistry. Diverse science leads to better science!
Thar she blows! Oregon’s last coal-fired power plant bit the dust this morning in a controlled demolition. The @portlandgeneral Boardman coal plant opened in 1980 and closed twenty years before the end of its design life to reduce emissions.
The urgency of the climate crisis is indisputable. Join us on September 28 in San Francisco for this year’s RE:WIRED Green conference to get actionable steps on how to tackle climate change. Here's who will be speaking: #REWIREDGreen https://t.co/FGhrlWOfN5 1/13
