Britain must continue to vote to end the USA’s blockade of Cuba:

The Communist Party of Britain is calling on the British government to vote in favour of the United Nations General Assembly resolution, ‘Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba’, once again.

For more than three decades, the world has overwhelmingly rejected this punitive policy. The annual UN resolution clearly expresses the international consensus that the blockade’s extraterritorial effects are illegal and cause significant harm to the Cuban people. The British government must vote to uphold the principles of sovereignty, non-intervention and a rules based international order.

We are concerned by reports that the US is placing signficant pressure of countries around the world to alter their longstanding positions on this resolution. The Communist Party of Britain rejects this kind of coercion. The British government must not be subservient to the US in compromising it’s longstanding position that calls for an end to the blockade against Cuba. Our foreign policy must not be dictated to by the US government.

The blockade has serious humanitarian and economic consequences on the people of Cuba – restricting the Cuban people’s access to medicines, trade and technology. Due to its extraterrirotial nature, it imposes unlawful burdens on third countries. Britain must vote to oppose this injustice at the UN General Assemby.

Both the people of Cuba and the people of Britain benefit from closer relations between our two countries. The Communist Party of Britain always give our solidarity with Cuba – we call for an end to the illegal blockade, and end to the spurious inclusion on the States Sponsor of Terrorism list.

We call on the British governement to publicly confirm that the UK will vote in favour of the resolution when it is presented to the UN General Assembly – again for the 34th time. We call on the government to not bow to US coercion and pressure.
