"How much is too much change at one time?
This is a game that has gone so far away from the human element, and so far into the numbers, the algorithms, and what the computer is going to spit out.
This offseason...
Instead of gradually bringing in a few new players and maintaining a coaching staff, or getting rid of the coaching staff and keeping a core of players....
To have an entirely new roster and an entirely new coaching staff, in this city, under this scrutiny, with a fanbase that was always going to be skeptical at minimum and angry at maximum with what happened to so many of their favorite players this offseason...
It was a recipe for disaster if this team didn't get off to a hot start."

David Stearns on the departure of Carlos Mendoza:
“Carlos has led the organization with passion and grace and is beloved by everyone who works with him on a daily basis.
Carlos’ impact on our players, staff, and culture over the last three seasons has been transformative.
Unfortunately, we know we are falling short and change is necessary to move forward."
"He's probably the least culpable of everybody that has contributed to this morass of a season that the Mets are in...but they had to do something. This is the move that teams make."
