@le_faye@StuartHumphryes ... using specifically Yiddish words. Rather, they would have thought of themselves as speaking a kind of Jewish-inflected German, which is what we might be seeing here (I don't know). My (lay) understanding is that as you went further west, Yiddish blended further into German.
@le_faye@StuartHumphryes Also, if I recall correctly this photo was taken in Austria. Again, I'm not an expert, but my family came from just over the border in Bavaria. My understanding is that they wouldn't have described themselves as Yiddish speakers, even though we have evidence of them...
@StuartHumphryes The sign above the door, in Yiddish, advertises books, as well as list of Jewish religious objects: prayer shawls (talisim), t'filin (these strap things you wind around your arms while praying) and mazuzot (sacred texts one attaches to doorposts in little decorated boxes).

Lockwood Survey Corporation aerial image of downtown, looking south along University Avenue, from Bloor to the lake. U of T campus in the foreground, Robarts Library under construction. Roundhouses in the distance. Much in between. Zoom in, lots to see.
@DavidCheater2 "Did you hear he sent a tweet boasting of his second murder?!"
I'm sorry, the worst possible interpretation is what gets retransmitted. That's how the internet works now; I don't make the rules.
People say Twitter-as-news has made us stupider, but deducing what actually happened from the jokes is a SKILL. You try and make sense of the Bay of Pigs Invasion from two hundred accounts tweeting, 'It's me, I'm the pigs.'
@Bistmath OMG, chocolate is the best for anosmia people. The balance of fat and the way it crunches then melts is so good. I mean other people _like_ chocolate, but it's one of the few things we still get, so that makes it special. Spicy foods, but pick carefully.
@Bistmath Don't worry, you'll lock in on other flavours. They'll probably be too subtle at first, but you'll taste them. Crusty bread. Put salt on it. Try some straight sugar (a sometimes food!).
