On this date, 154 years ago, slaves in Texas heard the news, "In accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves."

We honor the memory of Dick Cole, the last of the Doolittle Raiders, who passed away yesterday in San Antonio at the age of 103. When we covered a reunion of the raiders in 2011, Cole recalled the historic April 1942 mission clearly.
