Oleksandr Syrsky has finally been sacked as Commander-in-Chief (CiC), replaced with Mikhailo Drapaty. The western press and its Ukrainian subsidiaries are busy proclaiming that Syrsky’s ‘Soviet’ approach of high-casualty infantry assaults will now be replaced with Drapaty’s high-tech, newgen, insert buzzword warfare. But I thought Ukraine was already comfortably winning the war with 1:50 casualty rates, and Russian soldiers dying 20 minutes after deployment?

One can make the case that Drapaty is a more impressive military figure than Syrsky. But there are two more practical questions. Is it actually possible for Drapaty to change the army towards a more ‘humane’ and effective direction? Is he really conducting a ‘military revolution’, replacing Syrsky’s cadre with his own personnel? And what is the broader political impact of street protests forcing the president to change the Commander-in-Chief?

In terms of huge change, I’m skeptical. Syrsky was much-criticized most for his brutal assault units, but Drapaty will be forced to turn to similarly casualty-heavy offensive operations because of pressure to achieve results from Zelensky and the west. Besides, when the only recruits left are drug addicts and unhappy civilians, there’s little way to force them to die at the frontlines other than through violence. More importantly, Ukraine’s president and other top military figures are saying that mobilization needs to be massively increased to counteract a supposedly incoming Russian mass mobilization this autumn. Footage of forced mobilization continues flooding the internet, and the number of mobilization groups are apparently increasing.

In short, those dreaming of a bloodless war fought by robots are likely to be disappointed. Top figures in the army, including the ‘young generation of NATO-trained nationalists’, are quite explicit about this. Meanwhile, many nationalists in the army are enraged that limp-wristed civilian draft dodgers can transform the army by protesting, drawing dark and bloody historical analogies. More discipline is needed.
