In 2015, Elon Musk gave $10M to protect humanity from AI. In 2024, he raised $6B to build his own.
In the video below, he tells an MIT audience in 2014 exactly what he thinks AI is.
October 2014. MIT AeroAstro Centennial Symposium. Musk calls AI "our biggest existential threat" and says: "With artificial intelligence we are summoning the demon." Three months later, he donates $10M to the Future of Life Institute for AI safety research.
December 2015. He co-founds OpenAI, backed by a $1B pledge. The mission: build AI safely and in the open, before someone else builds it badly. By 2018 he's off the board. In 2024 he sues the company he helped start.
2023. Musk launches xAI. In May 2024 it raises $6B in a single round. The man who compared AI to a demon now runs one of the biggest AI labs on the planet.
My take: Musk never stopped believing AI is dangerous. He stopped believing anyone else should control it. If the demon gets summoned anyway, he wants to be the one holding the holy water.
So which is it: hypocrisy, or the only rational move once the race had already started?
