Scientists have uncovered evidence of a surprising connection between the uterus and the brain.
A hysterectomy is the second most frequently performed surgery in women after a Caesarean section. In the United States, around one in four women will have the procedure by the age of 65. While it can be a vital treatment for conditions such as cancer, it is also commonly used to address severe issues including fibroids, chronic pelvic pain, and abnormal bleeding.
New research from Arizona State University suggests the uterus may have a much greater influence on the body than previously thought.
In a study involving rats, researchers found that removing the uterus led to memory impairments even when the ovaries were left intact and hormone levels remained largely stable. These changes lasted for up to a year after surgery, which is roughly comparable to several decades in a human lifespan.
The findings hint at a direct biological link between the uterus and the brain. Surprisingly, the memory effects could not be explained by changes in reproductive hormones or ovarian function, factors that scientists had traditionally believed would account for any cognitive differences. Instead, the results suggest the uterus itself may communicate with the brain through mechanisms that are not yet fully understood.
Because the study was carried out in rats, the results cannot be assumed to apply to humans. However, researchers believe the consistent findings justify further investigation, especially given how common hysterectomies are worldwide.
The team stresses that these results should not deter women from undergoing medically necessary hysterectomies. Rather, understanding this possible uterus brain connection may help healthcare professionals better recognise any long term effects and develop strategies to support brain health after surgery.
