Nigerian politics continues to reveal a pattern that many had already predicted. The late Muhammadu Buhari once described the All Progressives Congress (APC) as “top to bottom,” a remark that now feels almost prophetic.

What we are witnessing today is a steady wave of politicians defecting from various parties into the APC. These defections are rarely driven by ideology or policy alignment. Instead, they are often motivated by political survival, access to power, and strategic positioning ahead of elections. When the balance of power shifts, many politicians quickly realign themselves with the ruling party to maintain relevance and influence.

This pattern exposes a deeper issue within Nigerian politics—the lack of strong ideological foundations among political parties. Party loyalty is often secondary to personal ambition, making defections a common and almost expected occurrence. As a result, the political landscape becomes less about principles and more about convenience.

In that context, Buhari’s “top to bottom” statement can be interpreted as a reflection of how deeply entrenched this culture is within the system. It suggests a structure where control, influence, and alignment flow through all levels, making the ruling party an attractive destination for politicians seeking stability and advantage.
