I came across a piece written from the British perspective about how The Gloucestershire Regiment was wiped out by Chinese forces in Korea. The article is drenched in sentimentality, portraying the Gloucestershire Regiment as extraordinarily brave—but it gets several facts wrong.
The Gloucestershire Regiment had roughly 750 men. With attached artillery, tanks, and other support, the total force engaged was about 1,000. The attacking force was not "27,000 men from the 63rd Army" as the article claims, but rather the 187th Division of the 63rd Army—about 9,000 men in total. Of those, the unit actually assaulting the British was the 560th Regiment, roughly 3,000 men. The other two regiments of the 187th Division, the 559th and 561st, were tasked with blocking enemy relief forces. So the real force ratio was about 3 to 1.
The fighting lasted roughly 30 hours, not the 3 days the article claims. In the end, after 129 British soldiers were killed, 459 surrendered, and a small remnant fled. The 560th Regiment suffered 176 casualties.
After the battle, the Chinese gave the British a balanced assessment: they regarded the Gloucestershire Regiment as a British "elite" unit with fine equipment and a glorious history, but concluded that its fighting will and combat effectiveness were both poor. That conclusion is well founded—the numbers speak for themselves. After just 30 hours of fighting, with only a quarter of their men killed, the remaining two-thirds gave up and surrendered. What more is there to say?
