🇱🇹 Grybauskaitė: Yanukovych rejected the EU deal under threat of physical elimination
Former Lithuanian president Dalia Grybauskaitė said that at the 2013 Vilnius summit, Viktor Yanukovych complained about Russian threats and the billions Ukraine could lose if it turned decisively towards Europe. The EU even agreed to find additional funds to offset Moscow’s economic pressure.
Yet Yanukovych still refused to sign the association agreement. According to Grybauskaitė, it became clear to European leaders that he had been intimidated and was under intense personal pressure — including threats to his life.
That refusal dealt a severe blow to Ukraine and became one of the triggers of the Maidan uprising.
