This applies a lot to timelines as well, people will forget how much they begged you to get on the project if you’re an hour late in delivery than you promised. Ergo, stick to your own timelines or agree on a timeline that you’re certain you can deliver within.
Don’t over promise and under deliver. Best say little and then deliver way above expectations. You don’t want to raise expectations that you can’t meet.
These can be easily dismissed as null if things go sour at an odd time. How do you protect your effort, time and money? Legalize your deal with the person hiring your services before you commence work.
As a creative, our services are more intellectual than practical, I mean this in a way that you get to do a lot of design thinking, research analysis and conceptualization to come up with solutions for businesses and projects.
Never enter into contracts or begin projects with all smiles and no brain. In fact, if possible, ensure that your engagement is legally binding. I’ve been beat in the butts, chances are you have as well.
Know how to politely tell people off if their objectives and values don’t sync with yours. It’s simple and will save you a lot of headache in the future. I find that lots of us play the loyalty game and lose ourselves in the process -become a shadow of someone else in their game
In as much as you may enjoy being part of CSR and volunteering schemes, you don’t want to be cajoled into doing it, cos then it becomes forced and defeats its intended value.
Refuse to be impressed by small talk. Oh people will come to you with great ideas, wanting all of you with a value exchange of a self acclaimed ‘huge platform’ to showcase your skills and services.
In fact, as a creative, there are high chances you’re good at multiple activities. If you Find out that you have multiple passions, work hard at what you can, there you’ll find your strengths and proceed to work out a table of preference for yourself.
Jack of all trades doesn’t always mean master of none. It’s very possible to be extremely good at video editing just as much as event planning and sales all at the same time. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
I quit my job in May, just before my birthday, and it’s been such an interesting roller coaster. I’ve had to take on varying projects all in line with my career path and have learned a handfull thus far.
