@MartinSLewis Having had a monthly pay check for years, I found that the state pension is paid on the same day of the week every 4 weeks. It does mean that for one month of the year you get 2 payments - I put the extra payment in my xmas fund.
@dsnorthnorth As one of your constituents I want to let you know that Starmer has my full support. The whole Labour government is making excellent progress towards pressing forward with the radical positive changes in the manifesto. Keep going.
In Sense and Sensibilty Jane Austen uses Devonshire. I suppose it was shortened since there is no town called Devon. County names ending in shire by and large are there to distinguish the name from the county town, such as Buckingham, Buckinghamshire etc.
I remember once hearing someone mocking an American for saying 'Devonshire' rather than 'Devon', implying it was parvenu usage. But historically, I believe it was common to say 'Devonshire', no? There is a Dukedom of Devonshire. Enlightenment on Devon v Devonshire welcome
