I just had my wheels rotated. Been going to the same place for a few years. The manager asked me why I had upgraded my Tesla from my 2023 Model Y (HW3). I said because this one drives itself. He said, “yeah, like highways, right?” I lolled and said “no mate, come for a drive”. So he did. Blown away. Had no idea this was a thing.

After about 5 minutes he asks which Teslas can do this etc. Says his brother has a Model 3. I ask when he bought it, he says last year. I say it can do it, he just needs to subscribe and download the software. More blown away. Like 🤯😱 blown away. I invited him to have his brother contact me if he needed any help.

We park and I fire up YouTube and show him Cybercabs in Austin. He like Whaaaaa?? 😂 💪🏻 🔥

He's right. The last codebase I worked on that you had a chance to understand was MS-DOS.

By the time Windows NT came along, you could be an expert on the scheduler or an expert on the allocator, but you weren't going to know fibers and OLE embeddings at the same level.

Plus, I'm wired to remember what code looks like in the editor, so I've got to see it, and you just can't see it all.

There's too much code for my context window. And in talking to people on the team much smarter than me, I'm not the only one.

Eventually, your brain (or mine, at least) sorts them into specifics and generals. So I might know specifically how fork() works but only have a general sense of how printf() actually formats floats. It still FEELS like you know, but you don't.

This is really cool. The vehicle lights up green to indicate it’s your car. You can open the trunk to put your items inside

Once in the car there is no steering wheel, no peddle. You just relax, watch a show, play a game or just do anything you want to do while you are driven to your destination

Right now the Tesla Cybercab is about half the price as Uber and Lyft

Elon Musk says the goal is to make them much cheaper

Elon Musk says Cybercab operating cost at scale should be around 20 cents per mile, with a rider price including taxes of 30–40 cents per mile

For reference it’s about $1.70 per mile with Uber and Lyft plus a base fair, booking fee and random surge pricing

Cybercab will change far more than transportation

Today, enormous amounts of valuable city land are used for parking lots, garages, airport parking and simply storing cars that sit unused most of the day

Once autonomous vehicles are moving and serving people all the time, cities will be able to reclaim huge amounts of that land and turn it into parks, housing, businesses, public spaces and beautiful places where people can actually meet, walk, relax and spend time together

That inevitably makes cities more beautiful, more useful and more human

At massive scale, Cybercab will not just make transportation cheaper and easier

It will give huge parts of our cities back to people that are now currently overtaken by massive parking lots

Wow, @Tesla Cybercab is doing really well in the rain with lower visibility.

If I was driving, I would have the wipers running on a higher speed, but the Cybercab's auto wipers are pretty relaxed. The experience feels so calm and safe.
