When we are being serious and can admit that "apart from works of the law" and "not by works" are synonymous with "alone," we can say that the Bible quite robustly and directly teaches that we are saved through faith alone.
Neither Calvinism (double-predestination) nor Arminianism (synergism) capture Scripture’s teaching of salvation. In Cal, God saves some and damns the rest (and so doesn’t will for all to be saved and come to knowledge of truth). In Arm, God’s grace hinges on US making a choice?!
Senator…reread Romans 9, 10, 11…Israel was never just a bloodline, nor was it just a nation…Israel has actually always been those who share in the faith of Abraham…in other words, faith in Christ (see Jn 8:48-59). I’m starting to wonder if you believe the OT is about Jesus.
“Returning to the subject of Cruz’s faith, the Texas senator said that his support for Israel was also rooted in his Christian faith, citing the biblical phrase: “Those who bless Israel will be blessed and those who curse Israel will be cursed.” Carlson mocked the fact that Cruz’s faith informed his pro-Israel views, and asked specifically the biblical citation...
After Cruz acknowledged he didn’t know the exact verse, the podcast host then incorrectly answered his own question, mistakenly saying it was in Genesis. (The verse is from Numbers 24:9).” https://t.co/px6NqpsDHd
"I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed."
These words from Gen 12 are not in reference to the modern day nation called Israel, but are ultimately a promise of Jesus Christ, the Son of God and the Son of Abraham who would bless all the nations of the earth through His death and resurrection.
Christians are free to make pragmatic arguments about why Israel is right to go to war with Iran and/or why the US government should support them. I think there are plenty good arguments of that nature to be made.
We are not, however, theologically bound to support (read: bless) the modern state of Israel simply because of its name or Jewish identity. Both our political and theological thinking will be cleaner if we keep our categories clean. Perhaps Ted Cruz should learn more about Iran. He could definitely stand to learn more about the Scriptures he cites.
