The Simpsons, The X-Files, Seinfeld, all of the great '90s shows were packed with refs to movies/lit/history. Learning by osmosis, it used to be a thing, rather than descriptive dialogue so you didn't have to pay attention to whatever streaming series was made for the background.

when i read shakespeare in school, we used annotated versions that used the margins to provide modern context for antiquated words, phrases, or references. it let you understand the text better and gave a broader historical sense around the time it was written.

@emgeejay that’s the problem: people aren’t doing that and I’m trying to think of a potential solution. obviously if you’re capable, just watch without the added help. I think we should meet people where they’re at. To many, the century since nosferatu is as big a barrier as Shakespeare.
