On March 4, 2025, Federal High Court Judge, Justice MS Liman, delivered an unusually lengthy ruling to assert the authority of the Federal High Court regarding the abusive, inhumane, unjust, and illegal arrest and detention orchestrated by Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, whom I have vehemently opposed for acting unlawfully.
The judge laboriously read his ruling, frequently pausing to make written corrections or additions, seemingly to justify why my international passport should not be returned to me preventing my return to the United States, where I reside with my family.
Among his absurd and costly pronouncements, Justice Liman claimed that I failed to include the names of my wife and children in my submission, which he deemed necessary to confirm my intent to return to them.
He also dismissed an SMS from my medical care team as insufficient proof of my need for routine medical care, going so far as to demand the CVs of my doctors.
He argued that a text message requesting I schedule a medical visit was inadequate evidence, in fact I have only used an app to schedule a hospital visit since my return to the US in 2024.
When addressing my flight ticket, he remarked that he was unfamiliar with or had never seen an e-ticket. Had I submitted the QR code of my flight to the court, which is the way I have frequently flown for years he might have accused me of planting a “digital bomb” in his courtroom.
These actions highlight the deficiencies in our legal system, not to mention the apparent collusion between judges and elements within the executive branch, such as the police, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and others. In any civilized society, what the illegal IGP did would be recognized as a deprivation of a citizen’s fundamental rights under the COLOUR OF LAW.
When charges are filed by an IGP to unjustly strip someone of their constitutionally guaranteed rights, it should result in criminal charges against the IGP himself, as it constitutes a crime. By intentionally upholding this injustice, Justice Liman has made himself an accessory to that crime!
“This act in itself will not delay their day of judgment.”- Walter Rodney.
The justice system in Nigeria has been hijacked by uniformed, uncouth security agents ranging from @OfficialDSSNG, @PoliceNG, and @CivilDefenceNGR. Today, they mounted illegally in front of the court, harassing everybody because of a thief, Yahaya Bello @officialgybkogi. The same Yahaya Bello they couldn't apprehend for months; even lawyers were harassed, and the @NigBarAssoc should stop this nonsense.
