🔹 Numerous new companies have been entering the landscape, attracted by the ambitions surrounding solid-state Li-ion batteries and their market potential

🔹 The chart below illustrates the newcomers in solid-state Li-ion batteries (SSBs) seen from the patent perspective for year 2022

🔹 In terms of patenting activity, China overtook Japan from 2017 and continued its fast rise in 2022

🔹 62% of patenting activity in 2022 was from China, followed by Japan at 12%, US at 9%, South Korea at 8%, and only 5% for Europe

🔹 Among the 10 most active IP players in 2022, on an entity basis, we see @panasonic / Sanyo (JP), Toyota (JP), Samsung (SK), WeLion NET (CN), LG Chem / Energy Solutions (SK), A123 Systems (CN & US), @SVOLT_Europe (CN), Nissan (JP), Global Graphene (US), Hyundai / Kia (SK)

🔹 Among the 20 most active IP players in 2022, 11 are from CN, 5 are from JP, 3 are from SK, 1 is from US … None is from Europe !

🔹 Several non-Chinese start-ups incorporated after 2016 entered the solid-state Li-ion batteries patent landscape in 2022, mainly originating from South Korea (Energy11, Inchems, BI lab, BioGeneSys) and the US (@nextech Batteries, Dynami Battery, EnergyX, #Ionobell, ABM Nano, #PureLithium, Auto Motive Power)

🔹 Among the 320+ identified notable 2022 IP newcomers in SSBs, 211 are from China (66%), 24 are from South Korea (7%), 20 are from the US (6%), 12 are from Japan (< 4%) and 11 are from Europe (< 4%)

🔺 How do you think the SSB patent landscape evolved in 2023 and will keep evolving now that Chinese authorities are even more ambitious at positioning China as a key player in the next technology frontier of batteries for electric mobility?"
