@FaithBorkowsky @LitMomsNC @missypurcell1 Not only that but in Ohio, the Dept. of Education has "Educational Service Centers" that hire professionals. OG tutors are the only hires that parents pay for out of pocket -- not the PTs, OTs, Speech, etc. Ugh!

Currently reading this. It’s astonishing to me that this was written 24 years ago and sounds the alarm that using pictures, context, and memorizing words is not reading and creates deficits for children yet it’s STILL the common practice today.

Reading “opens the world” if one can read but 65-94% of typical and diverse learners (with IEPs) in public schools CANNOT read at grade-level proficiently, @rweingarten.

Giving away books is so sweet, bless your heart, but reading isn’t natural—it MUST be explicitly taught.

@citizenstewart If you have a kid with dyslexia or a struggling reader, Balanced Literacy curriculums are not helpful. All students have the right to be taught to read. @1in5advocacy
