The more I think about it, the more I realise that the very existence of "democracy" as we understand it is just a story that has been successfully sold to us.

When have the people ever actually had the opportunity to choose their leaders? Who decides what candidates get to run in an election? Is it you? In 2023, why did Nigerians end up having to choose from a drug kingpin with urinary incontinence, a former VP who made a fortune off the back of public service, and Peter Obi?

Yes, you might have voted for Peter Obi and felt good about it, but why is an election always about either hoping for that wild card in what is otherwise a field of dry sewage turds or having to select the less terrible option from 2 dry sewage turds? Did anyone consult 300 million Americans and make them agree that no matter what happened, no matter how they felt about it, no matter how much they disliked both candidates, their next president would either be a sexual predator with a federal conviction or an empty skirt suit with no ideology - and there is nothing they could do about it?

Yet the fact of the matter is that even if every American or Nigerian voter had simply stayed at home on their election day, the next Nigerian president was always going to be one of Tinubu, Atiku, or Obi, and the next American president was always going to be one of Trump and Harris. Nobody is quite sure exactly HOW these became the only available options, but no matter what, the next president would be one of these people and there was nothing anybody could do about it. In a "democracy," whether you participate in the voting ritual or not, someone from a tiny selection of candidates - whose emergence you were not involved in - is always going to end up as your leader with the power to determine your life.

But because you take part in the one-day ritual of voting for one of the 2 or 3 candidates that you did not choose, you will now delude yourself that you have "democracy" because you apparently "choose your leaders." And in the rare event that (like 2023 in Nigeria) you get a popular outsider with a real chance of winning, the "democratic" institutions of the world will never allow him to be declared winner, but will instead start sending the US, UK and EU ambassadors to pressure him to concede after a 90-something-year-old sewage turd from the streets of Chicago is declared the winner.

You will observe all of this fuckery and then tell yourself "Democracy is better than a dictatorship because at least we get to change our leaders every 4 years and hope the next one is better." Meanwhile, you are not actually changing leaders. The real dictators in charge of the "democracy" behind the scenes are merely giving you preselected options to choose from every 4 years so that you erroneously feel included in and represented by what is actually the WORST kind of dictatorship - the hidden kind whose very existence sounds like a conspiracy theory.

Basically every 4 years, you get to go through a time-wasting, expensive national ritual where you vote for one of Pepsi and Coke, and you tell yourself that you're taking part in an "important democratic process," but the reality is that both the Coca-Cola Company and Pepsico are owned by the same shareholders (Blackrock etc).

I think that compared to this incredible charade, the countries that don't hide their structural dictatorship are actually likely to be the less dangerous and more people-centred ones. I think that our political energies as young Africans should shift away from the quadriennial voting ritual where somebody (not us) determines the Pepsi and Coke we can vote for, and the results are predetermined by the local US embassy anyway.

I think we should focus on hijacking that initial leadership selection process that is currently completely hidden and out of our hands. That is where all national leaders - whether "democratically elected" or "authoritarian" are actually selected.

The Body Of Christ in Nigeria must search their souls. Is Christianity just about miracles & the promise of wealth? Christianity in Nigeria must be more than that. It should be “leave no one behind.” Where are the Bishops, the clergy, the Daddy GOs?

Rhoda Jatua is a wife, a mother, she is a law abiding citizen. She has been in incarceration for a wholesome twelve months, for a crime she couldn’t have possibly committed.

Nigeria is a Secular State, is it not? So why the selective application of laws?

Nigeria is ranked one of the highest where Christians are persecuted. Christians in Northern Nigeria are becoming more & more endangered for their beliefs. Is Nigeria now an Islamic state? Why is the Christian Community in Nigeria silent on this?

Until we have leaders that can see past money, actively chase a bigger vision for society above personal self enrichment, have our institutions run by such people and the social contract becomes sacred again, Nigeria will only get worse. It irritates me when people link corruption or ineptitude to our country or race, knowing fully well that at a time if you tried to bribe a professor, Judge or police man they will report to the authorities and you will be dealt with. It is in these values that growth and excellence are established for the common good.
