Low-carbohydrate diet and risk of cardiovascular disease, all-cause, cardiovascular and cancer mortality: a systematic review and meta-analysis of cohort studies

@Chooi @PlantChompers @NutritionMadeS3 Once again (amazing that I have to keep repeating this), endless observational, clinical RCT, and Mendelian studies, have shown that elevated LDL-C and apoB are causal for ASCVD.
Why are trans fats so dangerous?
They elevate LDL, increase cardiovascular risk, and drive other negative metabolic processes like insulin resistance.
For this reason, cis fats are much less dangerous, as they do not have nearly as harmful a profile.

In addition, we see frequent references to the argumentum ad corporem, that suggests that anyone who ever gets anabolic treatments is inherently more knowledgeable about health than someone who doesn't.
I don't know if Hotez v Kennedy would be a net positive or net negative but I have a feeling that the notion that we settle scientific issues by having a leading scientist go up against a politician refereed by a comedian is a spotlight on the root of our societal woes
@ScottVMeyers @NanciGuestRDPhD Optimal diets need not contain any animal products. Someone who eats a plant based diet should supplement B12 100% of the time, many will also need vitamin D depending on their sun exposure. A small few may need DHA (I am skeptical about that, though).
Pretty reasonable story about saturated fat in The Washington Post this a.m. by @TamarHaspel , seems to me. I predict major head explosions in the comments. https://t.co/IDGNmRniHa
In this one, both an elevated lipid accumulation product (LAP) and an visceral adiposity index (VAI), were associated with an increased risk for early-onset type 2 diabetes among young Chinese adults.
- Elevated ceramide concentrations are associated with a range of age-related metabolic and proteotoxic diseases in different tissues, such as insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, liver steatosis, and Alzheimer’s disease.
So why does #priorauth exist?!
To “contain costs” by insurers…
Doesn’t sound terribly cost effective, does it? 😑
$58 million in labor cost alone of initial submission, not including the labor cost of denials/appeals and not including the cost of ED/hospital stays that results from delays/denials…
Sounds like it’s time to get rid of #priorauth, no?
@KevinH_PhD I think we need more studies on types of UPFs and disease risk like this one https://t.co/kiWA0Uorwr seems like it’s driven by a lot of known offenders - processed meat, soft drinks, French fries, refined grains, but reduced risk for UP whole grains, snacks, fruit-based products
@AuneDagfinn@KevinH_PhD Exactly. It is likely that negative effects of UPF are mostly explained by usual suspects; refined carbs, sugar, sat fat, high salt and etc. ,and by diet low in everything we know being healthy. This has been called western dietary pattern, long before UPF concept was developed
In the Blue Mountains Eye Study (n=2600), higher cereal fiber intake was associated with a 50% reduction in the incidence of chronic kidney disease after five years of followup.

The beef industry has built the most powerful propaganda machine in America.
And they've modeled it after the fossil fuels industry.
Here's how they did it. 🧵
@sciencebyjae The argumentum ad corporem subset of ad hominem argumentation is one of the most intellectually bankrupt of dialogue choices.
Its corollary, that we should pay close attention to the opinions of those with fashionable body types, is equally absurd.
@GodlessEngineer The level of self-awareness here is pretty hilarious.
Yes, only a weak person would laugh at and mock someone who's trying to make the world a better place and reduce suffering.

Even if we accept the theoretical possibility that SFA has a positive effect on energy balance (a theory that we have no evidence for), advice to increase dietary SFA would still be a very bad idea for overall CVD mortality, which is the most common cause of death on earth.
What's the net effect of a diet high in saturated fat on total energy expenditure?
The evidence from enzymatic pathways, metabolic ward studies in humans and animal research into mechanism suggests that saturated fat reduces total energy expenditure.

This study suggests that dietary SFA rises and falls with a 10-20 year lag time in the incidence of CVD deaths.
Drops in egg consumption, change to low fat dairy and reduced butter intake preceded significant drops in CVD deaths.
