It seems to me that you cannot credibly defend the principle, as Owen does here, that all ethnic and religious groups are entitled to demand a homeland of their own while also supporting, as I believe Owen also does, policies of mass immigration and state-sponsored multiculturalism. A demand for a homeland is plainly negated by such policies.

HORRIFIC. We wake up this morning to Portsmouth Harbour, the home of the Royal Navy, accepting illegal migrants onto our shore. They wonder why people are upset and angry.

This is a national disgrace and I’m heartbroken that this is happening in our community and country.

Put worse I think it’s going to continue here. Gosport, Fort Blockade, has been ring-fenced as a place to dock and Hasler is being converted into a detention centre to hold 600 at once.

Our communities are eroding around us and it’s just horrific to see. I’m genuinely heartbroken for our nation and what’s happening to it.

Interesting history lesson, Mayor. You left out one rather awkward detail:

Oswald Mosley was not some creature who appeared fully formed from the "political right". He had been a Labour MP, sat on Labour’s NEC and was a member of the Fabian Society before founding the British Union of Fascists.

Even George Bernard Shaw, one of the great Fabian luminaries, was still publicly praising Mosley in 1932, after the BUF had been founded.

Which does rather spoil the neat little morality tale in which fascism belonged exclusively to “the other side”.

History is considerably more inconvenient than a mayoral tweet.
