The Kingdom of Benin was casting brass sculptures using the lost-wax technique before the 13th century.

In 1897, British soldiers raided Benin City and took thousands of them. When the sculptures reached Europe, many refused to believe Africans had made them. They credited the Portuguese. They credited ancient Egypt.

Felix von Luschan, curator at Berlin’s Ethnological Museum, later wrote that the works stood among the highest heights of European casting. He meant it as a compliment. He did not realize it was a confession.

Most of those sculptures are still in European museums today.

When Europeans first encountered Great Zimbabwe in the 1870s, they refused to believe it was built by indigenous Africans and attributed it to Phoenicians, Arabs, or even the biblical Queen of Sheba. The colonial government of Rhodesia actively suppressed archaeological evidence that contradicted this, and archaeologists who concluded that Africans built it faced professional consequences.
The dry-stone construction without mortar is also confirmed, over 900 years old still standing, built entirely from locally quarried granite shaped and stacked without binding material.

The "Battle of the Bogside" didn't make it into the history books, and Free Derry Corner/Bogside is something many of you probably don’t know much about, it was the stronghold for Irish resistance, the residents of here commandeered an area that was not part of the U.K, this area was technically its own country during the Troubles and more than 50 years on, it has become a beacon of social justice on our Island of Ireland, a globally recognised symbol of resistance with those who are facing injustices across the world, a mecca for tourists and a means of highlighting national and international causes, its a powerful symbol of a community united, as well as a focal point for causes that matter to local people.

But some devastating and sad news, its very disappointing to see the Famous Free Derry Wall vandalised a few nights ago with sectarian graffiti mocking those killed on Bloody Sunday in the Bogside, this is an act of bigotry that the community of the Bogside will not tolerate,

This wall is an important part of our city’s history and identity, and thousands of pounds alongside countless hours of hard work have gone into restoring and protecting it this past few months for future generations.

Thankfully the graffiti is already being removed, but it does not take away from how offensive and divisive this act was. There is no place in Derry for sectarian vandalism or attempts to provoke and inflame tensions between communities.

Julius Malema didn’t kill or injure anyone. His bullet went straight into the air. But the court punished him more than the white man who killed his wife. This case is not about crime; it is Western-motivated and about silencing Julius Malema and the EFF.
