"Without a recognition that some things are true and some false, some actions right and others wrong, young people in particular are at risk of conforming their opinions to the opinions of those they look up to and follow"

In a column featured in @Discourse_Mag, @EDUThirdspace argues for teaching our young people a "doctrine of objective value" so they are properly prepared to either agree or disagree with the claims of internet gurus.

Today's E-Pluribus newsletter features commentary from Samantha Hedges (@EDUthirdspace), Sadanand Dhume (@dhume), and even an anonymous Canadian parent. More in the thread below:

Today on @Discourse_Mag, @EDUthirdspace discusses C.S. Lewis’s “The Abolition of Man” and why young people today are particularly vulnerable to propaganda and misinformation. https://t.co/dGzuJWOCum
My latest on Substack: Cal Newport on deep work & how to integrate such work into a classroom...
"To build your working life around the experience of flow produced by deep work is a proven path to deep satisfaction." - @ProfCalNewport

"The physical, material world is a mysterious place to many people ... With depression and anxiety on the rise, and fragility becoming more and more obvious ... one has to wonder what is the impact of avoiding reality."

Rowe's central message: "[youth] have the power to choose their path in life, and the role of educators is to help young people realize their agency—'the force of one's free will guided by moral discernment.'" @IanVRowe on what it means to be educated (https://t.co/nJ2EWwuwHy)
One means of building trust between parents and education systems is through deliberation. The further away policy decisions are made, the harder it is to build trust. Great article in @NationalAffairs, with my views on the purpose of schooling cited.

My latest on Substack: "By watching [my daughter] struggle, and letting her, I am helping her build resiliency. She gets upset, but she recovers...This, in my view, is one of the most important jobs of a parent."

1. On Florida HB 999, @Edsall quotes two scholars who have each made strong arguments against DEI, and even stronger arguments against DeSantis's illiberal response. Here's @AmnaUncensored, who is always so clear and eloquent on academic freedom:

On Substack: "young liberals who are experiencing higher rates of depression are reading and listening to catastrophizing messages from politicians, celebrities, and their peers, and ... they are also getting these messages in schools from their teachers"

New on Substack: "In the eyes of some, he was lifting kids up, in the eyes of others, he was creating narcissists. What often goes missing from both praise and criticism of Mister Rogers is his emphasis on self-discipline."

When I was 17, two of my friends and I took a Greyhound back to Indiana from Florida, with a midnight stop in Atlanta. We had to take precautions to be safe, of course, but we were prepared for it because ... we were free range kids.
WHAT??? Airline just told friend his daughters, 14 & 16, can't travel as unaccompanied minors bec it's not a nonstop flight. Adult MUST accompany them.
How is a 40 yo more competent than a 16 yo at changing planes or plans?
Even a SNAFU is not automatically unsafe. Its LIFE.
My latest on Substack: "But amid the growing backlash against how DEI initiatives are executed ... anti-DEI initiatives, if you will, have emerged. Are they just capitalizing on the disaster that is DEI?"

Roald Dahl's publisher changing his words after his death.
Apparently we have perfect insight into what is good and right, having attained purity. It is only past people who made errors, had secrets, believed things that weren’t true.
We are a confused and arrogant people.
WHAT EXPERTS ARE SAYING a kid must be 12 before they are "LEFT ALONE"?
A generation ago, 12-y.o.s were THE BABYSITTERS!
WE CANNOT KEEP UNDERMINING KIDS' confidence, development and FREEDOM by acting as if 12 is the new 2!

The assumption seems to be that parents will not act in their child's best interest. In the hospital, after giving birth to my daughter, we were treated like idiots. Perhaps some parents really are coming into the role blind, but should the state assume all of them are?
Should parents have the right to decide for themselves and their own children at what age their kids are ready to use social media and how, or should that decision be removed from parents and be decided instead by the state?
The banner of "parental rights" has been waved a lot:
On Substack: "Allowing children to do things on their own, discovering and exercising their independence in their neighborhood and community, when and where appropriate, is a primary ingredient to raising capable and resilient adults."
