Delft, one of the oldest cities (since 1246) in the NL, is renowned for its beautifully preserved medieval architecture (Niewuwe Kerk & City Hall), scenic canals, iconic Delft Blue pottery, and its innovative spirit.
Martijn will talk about how NWO can support early career researchers, and how NWO programmes play a role in research related to the energy transition in the Netherlands.

Martijn is a geologist (PhD at the VU Amsterdam, 2016) with extensive international post-doc experience prior to becoming a policy officer at the NWO (Dutch Research Council).

His research addresses the risks and impacts of geothermal activities on groundwater and how to address this responsibly. This, he believes, is essential to gain the societal support required to allow geothermal its full potential to contribute to CO2 emission reductions.
Spotlight on keynote: Niels Hartog
Niels Hartog is Principal Scientist Hydrogeology at KWR Water Research Institute and Guest Associate Professor in Environmental Hydrogeology at Utrecht University.

He mainly focusses on increasing the understanding and improvement of operational aspects such as well clogging prevention and thermal performance such as storage recovery efficiencies.

"The subsurface plays a crucial and growing part in sustainably cooling/heating buildings. My vision is that the enormous potential of this source of renewable energy must be put to its maximum use and available for future generations."
She is fascinated by rock and fault mechanics and how this is affected by fluids. Given that geothermal energy is related to the extraction and re-injection of (potentially chemically altered) fluids, there is a clear link between her research and the geothermal industry.
In 2018, Dr. Anne Pluymakers joined the rock mechanical group at TU Delft with an independent (VENI) grant from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) to study fluid-rock interactions in carbonate rocks, and was promoted to assistant professor in 2020.
