#OTD May 9, 1843, following the Dorr Rebellion, RI abolished the Charter of 1661, & the newly-written Constitution of the State of Rhode Island formally went into effect. It was the 1st State Constitution in the United States that explicitly granted voting rights to Black men.
This situation, created over decades, is unfair, makes housing for renters less affordable, and discourages business location and investment. Unless and until this issue is addressed, the tax structure will remain a drag on the City's growth and prosperity. (2/2)
RI should be embarrassed. We spend around $20K per student annually on K-12 education, yet:
🚨 2 in 3 students are not proficient in English Lang. Arts
🚨3 in 4 not proficient in math
🚨1 in 3 chronically absent last year

RI will never live up to its full potential until we can give every single kid an amazing education in our public schools. It doesn’t matter whether you’re an elected official, member of the business community, parent, student or teacher…this has to be our #1 focus.
I am very proud of this report and hope it helps to bring K-12 reform to the top of the state’s agenda. Everyone—not only policymakers and education leaders, but also parents, teachers, business and nonprofit leaders—needs to have more urgency around this issue.

But RI still has recovered only 92% of jobs lost during pandemic. Employed RI residents grew by 700 to 558,700, setting a new all-time high. Labor force (employed and seeking work) also up 1,800 to 575,100-- 3,000 more than before pandemic (this may be most positive news). (2/2)
Very positive jobs report for August from @RI_DLT. RI-based jobs finally moved--up 2,500--after only increasing by 400 over past three months. Hiring by schools and hospitality sector appears to have fueled growth. Unemployment rate at 2.8%. (1/2)

Small, but mighty.
Thank you to all our supporters who share a desire to make Rhode Island the best place to live, work, and raise a family.
We need to keep going to keep #RI02 firmly in Democratic hands. I know we can do this together, supporting @SethMagaziner.
