@bulliespicks Love that your doing this and would be an amazing story. Thanks for sharing your expertise with strangers. You have hooked my curiosity. Let’s go!
My child entered 4th gr with beautiful math strategies and fluency.
He is leaving 4th gr conditioned with a bunch of algorithms.
I just watched him solve 40-36 using the standard algorithm. 😩
He could solve that 5 years ago without batting an eye. What's happening?😠
After teaching something, I used to say, "Does anyone have questions?" which was usually met with silence.
Now I ask, "What's a question that one of your classmates might be thinking right now?" which almost always prompts a response.
Why do you think so many kids & adults are addicted to video games? Could it be that this is the only arena where they can struggle through problem solving? Kids don't sit down to study manuals or listen to lectures about video games, they jump in & begin & enjoy the challenge.
I experienced a lot of direct, explicit instruction. I was an A student. I memorized the steps, and was paralyzed as a problem-solver. In other words, I did math without understanding math, right into university. It's one of the greatest tragedies of my schooling career.
In Japan, teachers introduce a new mathematical concept by presenting an unfamiliar problem to students to grapple with on their own. Most of the students answer the new problem incorrectly, but the teacher guides the discussion to generate conversation about students’ mathematical thinking. Eventually, the teacher guides students in their thinking to uncover a solution, which is ultimately proposed by students, rather than the teacher #iteachmath https://t.co/2bTbTRaMD1
The one thing that I love about my coworkers is their natural ability to push for excellence. It creates a “good pressure” for me as the youngest teacher at RCA.
Every time I open my classroom, I have to bring my A+ game...because I know they will.
Never be the weakest link.

I've been arguing this point since my time @dcpublicschools. Thanks @Khuff8

@CoachBrianKelly Love the work you are doing, but we are 4th and long when it comes to offensive ingenuity. Please infuse some spice - go Irish! #nationalchampionshipgame
