Friends, I am sharing a new report co-written with @vijayprashad on how the discourse around corruption has been weaponized to advance the interests of neoliberalism & global capital in Africa => https://t.co/naqDPZ1pnV
Andrew Sardanis wrote that the euphoria when changes of government happen in Zambia is usually followed by disappointment as the opposition-turned-incumbent almost invariably repeats bad tendencies of past governments. Could this be the case after August 2021? @ssishuwa
This is Elijah, 26, and his brother Ernest, 22. The duo has been in detention since 3 October 2024 when the Zambia Police Service arrested them for alleged defamation of the President of Zambia, Hakainde Hichilema.
Their crime? Producing a short video on TikTok in which they asked @HHichilema to step down for perceived failure to run the country. Arrested in Kalulushi on the Copperbelt, Ernest and Elijah were transported to Lusaka, about 370 kilometres away, where they have neither relatives nor friends.
Under Zambian law, the police are required to charge suspects with a known offence and either release them on bond or present them before court within 48 hours following their arrest. Elijah and Ernest, detained at Ridgeway Police Station, are yet to be charged or taken to court, almost two months after they were arrested.

As the 2024 BRICS Summit approaches, I review South Africa's trade position in the association in the @dailymaverick. SA's membership serves political more than economic purposes. https://t.co/BmNLdj9MtN
I was featured on @PhoenixTV_News talking about the importance of South African president Cryil Ramaphosa's state visit to China. I also weighed in on the coming FOCAC Summit in Beijing.
@UjCacs
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa will pay a state visit to China from September 2nd to 5th.
Experts indicate that despite the South African government's reorganization, relations with China will remain unchanged. @EKMatambo

"From #South_Africa’s standpoint, #China’s methods of diplomatic prudency steeped in deference to history, and the ability to deliver on what has been agreed upon is more responsive to South Africa’s sensibilities both in foreign domination and the desire to move from rhetoric to practical relations that help the country to cope with its formidable challenges."

"At least two factors enhance #China’s allure in #South_Africa. The first is a keen understanding of the history of foreign domination in the regions previously known as the Third World. This understanding informs China’s prudent foreign policy, one that seems to promote national sovereignty. Secondly, China comes across as more results-driven, thus more pragmatic than what is perceived as the proselytizing tone of the West."
