After 6 years live, my Twitter AR app TweetReality just got the Twitter API access revoked this week! I am going to remove it from the AppStore.

End of the product I built entirely, designed, coded that kickstarted my career in AR with 150+ news articles in 20+ countries, got me to work at Apple.

Back then, ARKit was freshly released in 2017, viral concepts were around. Most people building those around got hired and stopped sharing those including myself, mostly for prototyping engineers positions like @nathangitter who went silent for 5y and shaped VisionOS design.

Now innovative AR experiences are made mostly on Social AR platforms, sometimes WebAR, not apps as much anymore. The social platforms, as they don’t require app downloads, are more adapted to contextual, short AR experiences.

While waiting for glasses democratizations, many people working on product AR have switched to social AR, which aside from B2B is one of the main source of revenue for this technology.

For example, Alper Guler originally built @kabaqApp, food photogrammetry for restaurants, which pivoted to @QReal3D a AR ads studio that is now 100+ people, got acquired and is now on the stock market.

For example @XavLar, used to be game developer at Twinkl building AR apps for education, then now works for Tactical, one of the leading AR ads studio based in Middle East, and just created a viral AR exp with millions of impressions.

Everyone is also working on AR glasses and utility AR, but the main revenue is still on the AR ads. Anyway, interesting evolution which I did not predict, but what’s great is that people and friends I know since 2017 doing AR are all still doing AR, everyone is impacting its development and adoption and more talented folks have joined the momentum.
