I'm constantly bombarded with people talking about something they call a "free market" but when pressed for what that actually means in reality, things get rather hazy. Nobody these days even knows what it means. It's become an empty slogan, devoid of any connection to the real world.

The “free market” of the original political economists was not a market where Rockefeller gets big enough to own half the economy, finance becomes a cartel, and corporations capture the state—while everyone chants that “the market will correct itself” and we watch society crumble in front of us (you know, like how it actually happened).

The point was to FREE markets from the fetters of feudalism: hereditary privilege, monopoly rents, landlordism, tolls, usury, and other forms of extraction that prevented the productive forces of society from developing.

And here is the contradiction we keep effing missing:

To free the market, you have to chain the market.

More, you have to ENSLAVE the market.

If everyone is actually going to have the opportunity to participate in the economy - the real, actual ability and not some theoretical "well, everybody struggling paycheck to paycheck can just go own a business!" nonsense - then society must prevent its largest private actors from swallowing their competitors, monopolizing entire industries, turning accumulated wealth into political power, and eventually subordinating the state itself.

We already ran that experiment. Rockefeller and the robber barons showed us where unrestricted competition goes.

Competition does not reproduce competition forever. Competition produces winners. Winners accumulate. Accumulation produces concentration. Concentration produces monopoly. Monopoly fuses with finance and state power.

The “actually existing free market” was therefore never some timeless equilibrium we foolishly departed from. It wasn't evil "government" getting involved and ruining everything. It was a historical process—and left to its own development, it helped produce monopoly, financialization, deindustrialization, and eventually the Ponzi-scheme economy Americans live under today.

That is why a genuinely strong state must stand ABOVE capital rather than being owned by it.

More, it must be a COMMUNIST state. A state oriented towards the things we share in COMMON. Our COMMON interest.

And that is precisely what makes China so successful today.

A strong Communist Party can use markets without permitting the market to become sovereign. Capital can operate, compete, invest, innovate and accumulate—but ultimately capital does not get to rule.

The market becomes a tool of social development rather than society becoming a tool of the market.

That is a far more meaningful kind of economic freedom than simply declaring Rockefeller “free” to buy everything. And far closer to what people like Adam Smith envisioned.

The minute you begin thinking in terms of the real world, these things become almost self-evident. The job of influencers and mass media is to never allow you to think about the real world.
