New: DC is cutting pay rates for childcare workers to keep its pay equity fund under budget. But pretty much no one is happy about it.
Most of the Council hates this idea. And daycare workers certainly do. So why is this happening, and what could anyone do about it?
Quite the ethics case here: An MPD officer got caught working his second job at Giant while he was also on duty (including posting on Insta about going to the movies while he was theoretically working).
He got charged with fraud, but acquitted. Now he faces $10,500 in fines...
THERE ARE NO SHELTERS IN DC FOR PEOPLE TO GO TO. 900 ppl sleep outside each night. There are 40 open shelter beds. Ppl will be arrested for being unable to afford rent.
Every reporter needs to ask Trump and his cronies where he wants people to go.
Maybe his new ballroom?
Leavitt says that the homeless in D.C. will be asked to move, and if they don't, they could be charged with a local law that prohibits blocking a public way. (Also known as incommoding.) MPD often deals with these using citations, not arrests. Also...

Interesting: The influential Committee of 100 has come out against the proposed Commanders stadium deal, urging the D.C. Council to negotiate a "fairer" proposal that would share more revenue with the city and ensure residents east of the Anacostia River benefit.
“This has been one of the most disheartening displays of undemocratic behavior that I’ve seen in my life,” he said, adding parents “want to revolt.” “You will see the biggest resistance, if they follow through with this, from D.C. parents that you’ve ever seen.”

DC has the highest costs for child care in the country. The child care subsidy program helps 7,000+ families afford care, but only half of child care facilities in the District participate in the program.
Violent crime in DC has been steadily trending down for decades and fell to a multi-generational low in 2024. Every single article covering whatever the administration does this week should mention that fact and highlight the data.

@DMVBlackLives@tomroussey7news What is the impact of fare evasion in D.C.?
Most measures of fare evasion include passengers riding when farebox is broken, students covered under D.C.’s Kids Ride Free but don’t tap their SmartTripcards, havent received cards, or cards malfunctioned.

Out of the justified rage and grief of our community arise our righteous demands for justice and accountability.
Even after being tried and convicted of killing us, police continue to receive special treatment. For over a century, this country has enacted thousands of reforms, introduced countless hours and new types of training, expanded mental health support, and promoted community policing by having officers work in the neighborhoods they come from. Yet, we always end up in the same place.
POLICE EVERYWHERE. JUSTICE AND SAFETY NOWHERE.
Policing is rooted in a system of power and control., where police officers are given a lot of authority over the public. This power is rarely held in check because the system was designed with very little oversight.
The system of policing is not broken. Its working exactly the way it was designed.

Today we honor and lift up the “Lioness for Liberation”, #SafiyaBukhari. Born in New York City, Safiya Bukhari joined the Harlem Black Panther Party in 1969. Imprisoned for nine years, for charges related to the Black Liberation Army, Bukhari was released in 1983.

1/🖤 #BlackAugustResistance! Today, we want to highlight the fight to #FreeImanJamilAlAmin. Imam Jamil Al-Amin (formerly known as H. Rap Brown) was elected Chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) in 1967, following in the footsteps of Kwame Ture.
Despite major support for taxing wealth to raise revenue, Mayor Bowser & DC Council failed to adequately fund dire housing needs & more in the FY25 budget. We examined how the mayor’s proposed & Council-approved budgets meet or fall short of our asks. https://t.co/W68mOJlPIX
