@RdgTerminalMkt has reached a huge milestone! They have composted 1 MILLION pounds – or nearly 50 dump trucks worth - of organic waste & diverted even more waste from landfills. 🎉

And there’s more exciting news: Reading Terminal Market has officially become a “Feed It Onward” partner, joining EPA’s initiative to reduce food waste and keep valuable resources in our communities.

The market has rescued surplus food for neighbors in need 🥕 turned food scraps into farm compost 🌱 and recycled fryer grease into clean biofuels. ♻

Breaking ground on a major cleanup milestone! 💧

EPA joined @USNavy, @PennsylvaniaDEP & local partners at the former Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Willow Grove to mark the start of construction on the Navy’s FIRST groundwater extraction and treatment system designed specifically to remove and treat PFAS.

🤝 Working together at the federal, state and local levels is key to tackling complex cleanups like this one. EPA is overseeing the cleanup to ensure it meets important environmental standards and protects human health and the environment.

The new system will help reduce the spread of PFAS-impacted groundwater, protect surrounding communities and move the site toward a cleaner, safer future. 🌎

💧 Clean water starts with the right infrastructure.

EPA is addressing groundwater contamination from the Old Wilmington Road Superfund site in Chester County, PA. Watch as a pressure reducing vault (PRV) is installed as part of a new waterline that will provide clean drinking water to approximately 50 nearby residents. 🛠️

Join us for a Croydon TCE Superfund site community meeting on 9/10 at 6 p.m. at Keystone Elementary School.

EPA will present its proposed plan for Operable Unit 2 (OU 2) and discuss the Agency’s preferred alternative. Learn more about the site, ask questions, and share your thoughts directly with EPA representatives.

The public comment period for EPA’s proposed plan will run until September 30, 2026.

While September is National Preparedness Month, EPA's emergency response team is always ready to respond to emergencies. Our team is on call 24/7, 365 days a year, coordinating with local, state, and federal partners & tribes to address chemical spills, hazardous releases, and natural disasters.

They provide expert assistance, including technical guidance on hazardous materials, environmental monitoring, cleanup oversight, and documentation of violations to ensure communities are safe and responsible parties are held accountable.

River Road Cattle Company is a multi-generational, 1,200-plus acre beef cattle and diversified farm located in Louisa County, Virginia.

Operated by the Hopkins family, co-owner Steve Hopkins was named the 2025 Virginia Farmer of the Year for his leadership in the state's beef cattle industry. We were in the field seeing the conservation practices that the farm uses to help protect the environment as well as water quality.

People like Dale Gardner with the Virginia State Dairymen's Association (VSDA) assist dairy farmers in developing and implementing nutrient management plans on their farms. The oldest continuously operating family-owned dairy in Virginia, Oakmulgee Dairy Farm, has partnered with Vanguard Renewables to install an on-site anaerobic digester. The renewable natural gas produced at this farm will go on to fuel AstraZeneca’s Maryland biopharmaceutical production facilities.

During this visit, we joined a roundtable discussing regenerative agriculture, soil health, producer-led conservation, and EPA-funded efforts helping Virginia farmers strengthen sustainability across dairy and row crop operations. 🌱🤝

🔬🌿 Science in the field at Hershey Run with @DelawareDNREC!

Region 3 scientists recently surveyed Hershey Run in Newport, Delaware, to document submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) growing within the stream channel. 🌱💧

Why survey the plants? This section of Hershey Run is slated to be relocated as part of remediation work associated with the nearby Koppers Superfund site, a 300-acre former wood-treatment facility.

Scientists identified two SAV species within the surveyed reach. While both are non-native, they still play a role in the local ecosystem—providing habitat and serving as a food source for waterfowl. 🦆🌿

Surveys like this help scientists understand the ecological conditions that exist before work begins, providing valuable information to consider as remediation moves forward. 🔎🏞️

Meet Laura Nguyen, an Administrative and Program Specialist in @eparegion3's Chesapeake Bay Program Office.

Laura serves as the office’s front-line coordinator, supporting daily operations, improving office efficiency and overseeing a variety of IT and service-related contracts. She works to create a collaborative, seamless work environment while managing physical security and logistical operations.

She enjoys the hands-on work of coordinating for the premier watershed restoration partnership. Laura recently participated in a Congressional field day, hosted by EPA staff, that demonstrated real world environmental sciences and restoration for U.S. Congressional aids and staffers.

Most colleagues don’t know that Laura is a U.S. Army Reservist, having served 20 years.

Our Regional Administrator recently toured the @U_S_Steel Edgar Thomson Plant at Mon Valley Works in Braddock, PA, getting a firsthand look at steelmaking operations & the facility’s role in the region’s manufacturing economy.

Domesstic investments in U.S. energy and environmental benefits will help Power The Great American Comeback as Mon Valley Works helps supply steel can be used in everything from 🚗American-made automobiles and 🏠 home construction to appliances and metal building.
