🌊🤝 Cooperative federalism in action!
Recently, our biologists supported the @orsancochannel bimonthly water quality sampling program on the Ohio River at the Monaca monitoring station in Pennsylvania, using an EPA research boat. 🚤
This program, launched in 1975, provides critical data for assessing water quality. The data collected helps our state partners in Pennsylvania identify polluted waters, track changes over time, ensure polluters follow environmental regulations and are held accountable. 🌊🔍
The moving equipment, known as Pandora, is a spectrometer that tracks the sun and moon to detect minute changes in ultra- violet and visible light. This information is then used to identify the amount of trace gases in the atmosphere as well as validate satellite data.
This effort by @NASA & @epa will improve long-term monitoring of gases in the region 🔭 🌌

AI technology is transforming waste management at a facility in our region. ♻️
We toured the innovative AMP Sortation facility in Portsmouth, Virginia, to see how AMP’s advanced AI-powered system uses computer vision, robotics, and pneumatic air jets. 🤖 This technology automatically detects and separates recyclables and organics from bagged municipal solid waste—eliminating the need for separate recycling bins or trucks. 🚛
What makes it unique: The system sorts raw materials into different streams—recyclables by type, organic matter (which is turned into biochar), and residue that can be converted into biofuel. 🌱🔥
This recycling effort is a gamechanger for the Southeastern Public Service Authority of Virginia, which serves over 1 million residents. 🌍 Starting as a pilot project, AMP partners with SPSA to demonstrate how cities and regional waste authorities across the country can modernize recycling, reduce environmental impact, and save money. 🔄♻️

🌊 A day spent exploring the Sound! #LongIslandSound
Recently, we joined @eparegion1 & @eparegion2 for an action-packed day on the Long Island Sound.
🤝 In partnership with @NOAAFisheries, EPA and the Long Island Sound Partnership are working together to restore oysters in the Sound.
🦪🌊 Our Region 3 Dive Team is supporting this project through monthly dives to help @NOAA and EPA’s Long Island Sound Office collect important environmental data.

Last year, EPA took a major step to protect the endangered Atlantic Sturgeon here in our region. 🐟
We established federal water quality standards for 38 miles of the Delaware River, helping to improve water quality and support vital fish populations—including the historic Atlantic Sturgeon—a key species for both commercial and recreational fishing. 🎣🌿
Fun Fact: Fossil records over 120 million years old show these torpedo-shaped fish with bony armor plates called scutes—like ancient dinosaur armor. They can live up to 70 years, grow up to 16 feet long, and weigh as much as 800 pounds.

The Trump EPA will NEVER allow foreign companies to pollute or poison American communities. The United States will not be a safe harbor for violators who pollute our nation’s waterways. Today, EPA’s Assistant Administrator for Enforcement and Compliance Assurance, Jeffrey Hall, joined @TheJusticeDept officials to announce the indictment of two foreign corporate entities and a shoreside superintendent in connection with the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in March 2024.
Thanks to the incredibly hard work of EPA’s criminal investigators and our federal partners @FBI and @USCG, we are holding reckless corporations accountable to the greatest extent of the law and securing health and safety for all Americans. More here: https://t.co/YtRHQlKQxb
Following the collapse of the Potomac Interceptor, which resulted in at least 240 million gallons of raw, untreated sewage discharging into the Potomac River, President Trump received a federal assistance request from DC Mayor Muriel Bowser. The White House immediately assigned EPA as the lead federal response agency, where we worked alongside partners on all levels to coordinate and execute our repair and remediation process. This included conducting water quality and soil sampling, site remediation work, and general technical assistance.
Today, months ahead of schedule, we are proud to announce our federal remediation is complete. ✅

From Brownfield to Brewery! 🌱🍺
Thanks to EPA’s Brownfields program, we help transform formerly contaminated spaces into vibrant community spaces. Today, the Great Wilderness Brewing Company stands as the first brewery in the Town of Pulaski, Va. What was once a site assessed using EPA funding, now is a thriving gathering spot — with its grand opening earlier this year! 🎉
Beyond craft beer, the brewery has created jobs and attracted additional investment, helping to build a stronger local economy. The Town of Pulaski continues to evaluate properties for future reuse and growth.

🌿 Going the extra mile for our planet! Our dedicated staff in Wheeling, WV, are out in the community picking up trash and helping keep their neighborhood clean—because environmental protection doesn’t stop at the office door.
We protect the environment inside and outside of work. 🌎
🌊Exciting news on Long Island Sound!
🦪We had an inspiring day on Long Island Sound as EPA leaders teamed up with partners to champion the protection of Long Island Sound.
From habitat restoration to stewardship initiatives, EPA and the Long Island Sound Partnership are hard at work preserving this vital ecosystem and supporting local communities. 🏖️
🤝Partnership and science are at the heart of these efforts, ensuring clean water, strong coastal economies, and sustainable recreation for generations to come.

Our EPA team works behind the scenes at major events in our region — including the NFL Draft! 🏈
Our On-Scene Coordinators traveled to Pittsburgh 🏙️ at the request of @PghPublicSafety & Pittsburgh Emergency Management & Homeland Security to identify and respond to any potential hazardous threats. ⚠️
EPA led an air-monitoring & sampling task force, made up of EPA, @dhsgov & @uscg. They used real-time air monitors deployed across the event footprint.
Stay tuned — more high-profile events are happening this summer across our region! While you may not see it, we’re working behind the scenes to keep everyone safe.
@Pittsburgh
Check out our new video on Source Water Protection to learn more about the small ways each of us can play a role.
Together, we can help by reducing chemical use in our yards, properly disposing of medications, and staying informed. Every action counts. More: https://t.co/tkhhiFkoVi
🌎 Bridging education and environmental cleanup. EPA hosted a tour of the Chem-Fab Superfund site for a hands-on environmental remediation class from @DelVal.
Students passionate about environmental management got an inside look at cleanup efforts, including groundwater treatment and vapor mitigation systems, in Doylestown, PA.
🚧 This is where classroom learning meets real action—showing the next generation how we protect and restore the environment! 🌱

Now, thanks to a $1 million Brownfields Cleanup Grant, this project will clean up historical contamination from fuel oil while protecting endangered species, including five freshwater mussel species, the most diverse waterway east of the Mississippi! 🌊🌎
🎣 Once completed, the remediation of the site will preserve the natural beauty of French Creek. This project will increase tourism to the area and give a boost to the local economy.
🌿 Did You Know? A collaborative effort is underway to revitalize French Creek in Crawford County!
🏗️ Recently, stakeholders including @USACEHQ, @PennsylvaniaDEP, @pafishandboat, and local contractors met with Economic Progress Alliance of Crawford County to review permits and biological assessments.
Cleaning a contaminated site is tough, doing it beneath a flowing river is even tougher. Learn how EPA teams are doing just that.
This video breaks down how dredging and capping work—two critical components of EPA’s Superfund cleanup at the Bear Creek Sediments site.
