This dream of the Massawa port to #Somalia was tried by Emperor Haile Selassie and then by Mengistu Haile Mariam, and both failed. What makes PM Abiy think it will work with him?
News: #PM_Abiy says military buildup to serve as regional shield, expands training to maritime domain to secure peace from tip of #Somalia to #Massawa port
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said the military preparations undertaken by his government are intended to serve as a pillar of support and a shield for countries in the region, announcing that training has expanded into maritime environments to help secure regional peace and combat piracy and terrorism from the tip of Somalia to Massawa port in #Eritrea.
Speaking at the #Hawassa City International Stadium in the Sidama Region on 22 February 2026, Abiy said military training, previously conducted on land, mountains, and rivers, has been broadened to include maritime operations.
He added that Ethiopia would work with “brotherly peoples” to eliminate maritime terrorism along the #Red_Sea corridor to ensure regional development and prosperity.
Field Marshal #Berhanu Jula, Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces, said during the ceremony that #Ethiopia has built a versatile and reliable national defense force, strengthened in both quantity and quality.

The war between Addis Ababa and the Tigray, starts again—and this time it will be very different from the last.
From the Tigray side, the conflict is likely to be driven by revenge and accumulated grievances. For PM Abiy it is shaping up as a fight for survival and national ctl.
News: #AU Chairperson calls for maximum restraint amid renewed tensions in #Tigray
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has urged all parties in #Ethiopia’s Tigray region to exercise maximum restraint as tensions rise and reports emerge of renewed clashes in parts of the region.
In a statement issued on Friday, the AU Commission said its Chairperson is closely monitoring developments in Tigray and expressed deep concern over recent developments. He re-emphasized the paramount importance of preserving the “hard-won gains” achieved under the African Union-led Permanent Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (#COHA) signed between the federal government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (#TPLF) in Pretoria on 2 November 2022.
The Chairperson called on all parties to refrain from actions that could undermine confidence and to resolve outstanding issues through constructive dialogue, in full adherence to both the obligations and the spirit of the Permanent COHA.
The AU’s call comes amid heightened uncertainty in northern Ethiopia. Addis Standard reported on Thursday that Ethiopian Airlines suspended all flights scheduled for 29 January 2026 to airports in Tigray, including #Mekelle, #Axum, #Shire, and #Humera, according to information obtained by the magazine.
In a developing report, AFP said the flight disruptions were linked to clashes between federal forces and Tigrayan forces in parts of Tigray. Citing security and diplomatic sources, AFP reported that hostilities erupted in recent days in Tselemt, western Tigray, an area also claimed by forces from the neighboring Amhara region.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's rhetoric regarding attack on Eritrea and his keen interest in securing access to the Red Sea carry significant implications and multiple interpretations. Analyzing these statements requires a nuanced understanding of the region's geopolitical dynamics. It's unlikely that a leader would overtly declare plans for an attack on a sovereign, independent nation, that is a member of the United Nations.
Considering this, if Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed openly speaks of attacking an independent country like Eritrea, it may serve as a strategic decoy. This raises the possibility that the real focus might be on another target, such as Somalia, particularly Somaliland region, which could be perceived as more vulnerable.
Therefore, it's crucial to thoughtfully assess all available information, considering both the security and political implications within the region. A careful and wise analysis will enable us to anticipate potential shifts and strategies, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the situation and its broader impacts.

@AbdiwahabSheik7 It's time to cool down tensions and transform politically war-torn areas into spaces of peace and collaboration. The Horn of Africa is shouldering too much, and Eastern African communities need peace. Leaders should work together for a brighter, more equitable future.
Happy EID to all, Muslims and happy Eid to our friends and colleagues. Let us celebrate this wonderful and magnificent day. A day of forgiveness and a day of peace and prosperity.
Al-Shabaab needs to denounce and disassociate itself from al-Qaida. It must stop killing innocent civilians and destroying businesses and properties, and it should suspend all terror activities.
There is only one Somalia, which is called the Federal Republic of Somalia and its federal member states. Somaliland, Puntland, Jubbaland, Galmudug, Southwest, Hirshabelle, and SSC is under consideration to be fully recognised as a viable federal member state, though I'm not a big fan of federalism.
One day all these patterns of colours will disappear and only one flag remains. Isha Allah
Eid Mubarak to all Muslims around the world. May Allah forgive our past, present, and future sins and accept our good deeds. May Allah bring peace to the world. Ameen, Ameen, Ameen.
I have listened to a voice presumably recorded by one of the brutal and dangerous Khawarij leaders, Kaba Kutukade, calling on the Middle Shabelle communities to surrender, naming tribes that stood against them and supported the government. It’s sad and very disturbing indeed that President HSM sabotaged counterterrorism operations and chose to prioritize political gains rather than defeating terrorism.
My Fellow Somalis, Al-Shabaab is not like the Taliban of Afghanistan, and Al-Shabaab is not Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham in Syria. I repeat they are not going to govern Somalia peacefully and have no goal other than turning Somalia into hell.
Is #Mogadishu at risk of mirroring #Damascus or #Kabul? Over the past 10 days, alarming security concerns have risen as terrorists gain ground against the government. The situation in southern #Somalia is looking increasingly serious. Let's hope for peace and stability. 🇸🇴
ISIS appeals to individuals disillusioned by what they perceive as Al-Qaeda's deviation from its original goals. This perception of moral integrity and steadfastness in their mission enables Daesh to draw in those who are searching for a more uncompromising and radical form of VE
ISIS argues that Al-Qaeda has become morally corrupt and is transforming into a money-oriented cartel, which is why Daesh manages to attract more hardcore terrorists. By emphasizing its ideological purity and commitment to establishing a caliphate free from external influences.
Over 40 fighters, including 12 foreigners, killed in recent ISIS conflict in Puntland, Somalia. This underscores a critical security threat we shouldn't underestimate. Global action needed.

According to our information, Moalim Ayman is still alive, but Alshabab lost Moalim Madahey another senior officer which is a significant blow to the group. This is a positive step towards weakening terrorist activities and fostering stability in Somalia and the region.
The tides are turning against Alshabab as they face significant setbacks. This powerful terrorist organization is finally losing its grip on terror. Thanks to President HSM and relentless efforts by brave security forces, we're witnessing the downfall of Alshabab. #FailingAlshabab #VictoryAgainstTerror" @HShPrez2Ware @HassanSMohamud@HSNQ_NISA
