I call it the “People Will Have to Die” Fallacy. Who is that person who will only be convinced by "death and destruction?" The mom who is worried about vaccine safety? Or a person of color who is asking whether the vaccine was studied in people like her? Or someone who does not have easy access to a vaccine?

Today is Holodomor rememberance day. In her incredible book, Red Famine, Anne Applebaum describes its horrors in 1930s. One of the most striking chapters tells the story of global media's silence and denial. This was mostly due to Walter Duranty, Chief Moscow Correspondent for the New York Times, who was on Stalin's payroll and refused to acknowledge the existence of Ukrainian famine (his Pulitzer prize shockingly was never revoked). It was a little-known Welsh journalist, Gareth Jones, who travelled to Ukraine to discover the famine and alert the world - the subject of a film, Mr Jones. How history repeats itself - Ukraine is again under Russian assault and the world is turning away.

9% of US newspaper articles are written fully or partially with the help of AI, according to a new study from @jennajrussell, @MohitIyyer and team at the University of Maryland Computer Science and their colleagues at @pangram, a leading AI detection company.

If this is concerning to you, most Americans agree, according to a @pewresearch survey. They trust AI-written articles less (as they should), and they want AI-written content labelled as such. Yet most newspapers have no AI disclosure policy. Only a couple (including @nypost - kudos!) specifically ban AI-written content.

More than 9% of all news in U.S. newspapers contains at least some text created by artificial intelligence (AI), according to new research led by University of Maryland computer scientists.

The study, based on analysis using a tool developed by Pangram Labs, also found that AI use in published articles is rarely disclosed, and that usage is much higher in smaller local outlets than nationally circulated papers. It was posted Thursday on the preprint server ArXiv.

“As a reader, you generally don’t have a way to know if the news or the opinions are coming from a human or from AI,” said Mohit Iyyer an associate professor at @UMDscience and the study’s senior author. “It makes it hard to trust the factuality of the content,” he said, both because generative AI chatbots frequently get facts wrong and often engage in “hallucination,” or fabrication.

A charismatic public figure -our “hero” - is on a mission. Maybe it's to prove that the measles virus (either live or in the MMR vaccine) causes autism. Maybe it's to perform multiple blood tests on a single drop of blood. Maybe it's to deliver incredibly high returns to investors, or to become the best cyclist in the world.

Then the headlines come, alleging that our hero is a fraud.
