The funeral of Pope Francis @pontifex was (1) a very moving ceremony where we said goodbye to a global leader who was committed to human dignity, solidarity, multilateralism and the fight against food insecurity and climate change; (2) a diplomatic ceremony at the highest level, to pay tribute to a very important sovereign, who at the same time was the head of 1,4 billion catholics in the world; (3) a geopolitical moment of reconciliation in search of a just and lasting peace, in the spirit of Pope Francis @TerzaLoggia🇻🇦. As 🇪🇺EU Ambassador to the Holy See, I was honoured and glad that the European Union, after 55 years of diplomatic relations, was strongly represented by @eucopresident, @vonderleyen, @EP_President @kajakallas and @AntonellaSberna. I was also glad that @magyarpeter102, Member of the European Parliament, and many other MEPs were part of the EU delegation. Thanks a lot to the great team of @eudeleg_rome for their great support in making this strong EU participation possible.

Pope Francis @Pontifex was a very special Holy Father to me. I had the honour and privilege to meet him several times during my life, and he always impressed me with his humility his deep humanity, his warm personality, but also with his great sense of humour. His unwavering solidarity with migrants and the weakest in society, his firm opposition to the death penalty, his strong commitment to addressing climate change and debt relief, as well as his tireless calling for a just and lasting peace in conflicts and wars around the globe inspired millions, far beyond the Catholic Church. In 2016, on the initiative of @JunckerEU, @MartinSchulz & @donaldtusk, Pope Francis was awarded the Charlemagne Prize🇪🇺. Personally, I found his commitment to a more modern church, to interreligious dialogue and to enhancing the role of women in the church remarkable. One of his last official acts was the appointment of Sr. Raffaella Petrini to the office of President of the Pontifical Commission for the Vatican City State and President of the Governorate. May he rest in peace.

This was quite an intense diplomatic week for #TeamEurope🇪🇺 in Rome: two days of strategic reflection & discussions with and among the Ambassadors of the 27 EU Member States about our joint work at the United Nations🇺🇳 @FAO, @WFP & @IFAD in the fields of food security, sustainable food systems, enhanced support for Ukraine and Gaza, stabilisation of Syria, and many other themes, first in #VillaSpada @AmbIrelandRome🇨🇮 and then in #VillaEuropa🇪🇺 @eudeleg_rome. And we had the first visit of our new EU Equality, Crisis Preparedness & Crisis Management, the impressive @hadjalahbib, for exchanges with European & international partners in Rome on our humanitarian action and the need to respect international humanitarian law @orderofmalta @TerzaLoggia🇻🇦 @Antonio_Tajani🇮🇹🇪🇺. More than ever, the European Union stands for, and works for, the rules-based international order.

Meeting of the Syria Quint 🇺🇸🇬🇧🇫🇷🇩🇪🇮🇹🇪🇺 at Villa Madama in Rome with the participation of the EU‘s Foreign Minister @kajakallas. The meeting focussed on coordinating efforts to assist Syria in facing the huge challenges of the Syrian provisional government and Syrian society in the post Assad transition. The EU reaffirmed the importance of an effective and efficient inclusiveness; for protection of minorities; rule of law; accountability; justice; and territorial integrity of Syria, as essential condition for reconciliation and for sustained peace in the country. The EU is ready to support a Syrian-led and Syrian-owned process with the support of the 🇺🇳.

💯days as 🇪🇺EU Ambassador in Rome: It is an honour to serve the European Union and its 27 Member States as Ambassador at the Holy See🇻🇦, the 🇺🇳UN Organisations in Rome @FAO @WFP @IFAD, the Republic of 🇸🇲San Marino @AffariEsteriSMR and the @orderofmalta. My multilateral and bilateral diplomatic mission is to strengthen the EU’s global role, bring about united #TeamEurope🇪🇺 positions and reach out to our allies and new partners in the world. This should enable us to better fight the human-made causes of hunger and poverty in the world, further the #Right2Food, promote a competitive & sustainable agroeconomy and strengthen the rules-based international system. Unwavering support for Ukraine🇺🇦 and promoting the EU’s enlargement and neighbourhood policies is an integral part of my work in Rome. Thanks a lot to all those who received me so warmly in the eternal city, to all the experienced colleagues who are helping me every day to strengthen #TeamEurope🇪🇺 in Rome, and to my great team of the @eudeleg_rome for their committed work! Wholehearted thanks also to my predecessor @avalkenburg who laid the groundwork for effective diplomatic EU work in Rome and, with her valuable advice and support, helped me very collegially to get started in this challenging post. And thanks a lot to @JosepBorrellF, @kajakallas, @eucopresident @CharlesMichel, @antoniolscosta, @vonderleyen & @EP_President @RobertaMetsola for entrusting me with this highly interesting mission.

Making @FAO fit for purpose will be a member-driven process. This was just confirmed by an overwhelming majority of FAO members at the FAO Council, including 🇪🇺EU27 and EU candidates. Our focus is and must remain to fight more efficiently hunger in the world. I look forward to working closely together with my colleagues from all regions of the world on this in Rome.

It is a true pleasure to welcome today Wolfgang Burtscher, 🇪🇺Director-General of @EUAgri, in Rome. With the Ambassadors of the 27 EU Member States, with senior managers of @FAO @maumartina and with the Ambassadors of 🇧🇷🇨🇭🇨🇦🇲🇾🇳🇿🇿🇦, we discussed the current and future challenges of the EU‘s Agriculture Policy, the importance of global food security and the G20 High-Level Principles on #Bioeconomy. I welcome that @EUAgri is actively engaging and strengthening our 🇪🇺partnership with @FAO on policy issues that will be at the core of the future Vision on agriculture and food.

Today, I had my introductory meeting with Alvaro Lario, President of the International Fund for Rural Development @IFADPresident, one of the 3 Rome-based 🇺🇳UN organisations. The European Union🇪🇺 and @IFAD are very close partners, and we appreciate the efficiency of @IFAD‘s teaming up with the private sector, the @EIB and notably the EU‘s #GlobalGateway to bring sustainable investment to rural areas worldwide. This will be very important in the mandate of the new @EU_Commission @EU_Partnerships. We also discussed the start of @IFAD’s work in Ukraine🇺🇦, which in October became the 179th member of @IFAD. I look very much forward to our good cooperation, @IFADPresident!
