In 1856, surveyors calculated Mount Everest’s height at exactly 29,000 feet. Concerned that the public might assume the figure was simply a rounded estimate, they officially reported it as 29,002 feet to emphasize that it was the result of a precise measurement.

Mount Everest’s height has been recalculated numerous times over the past 170 years as surveying methods became more precise. In 1856, the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India estimated the mountain at 8,840 meters (29,002 feet), establishing it as the tallest known peak on Earth. A more refined Indian survey in 1955 updated the height to 8,848 meters (29,029 feet), which became the internationally recognized standard for decades.

China conducted its own measurement in 1975 and reported Everest’s height as 8,848.13 meters (29,029.3 feet). Advances in GPS technology led an American expedition in 1999 to calculate a height of 8,850 meters (29,035 feet), including the snow cap. In 2005, China measured only the exposed rock summit and reported 8,844.43 meters (29,017 feet), sparking debate over whether the mountain’s permanent snow and ice should be counted. Following years of GPS, satellite, and ground-based surveys, Nepal and China jointly announced an official height of 8,848.86 meters (29,031.7 feet) in 2020, incorporating both the rock summit and snow cover. Everest’s elevation continues to shift slightly due to tectonic forces, earthquakes, and the ongoing collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates that formed the Himalayas.
