Wolf pups start developing personalities from a young age, which, in part, helps pups to quickly form a hierarchy of sorts amongst their littermates. This small pup, with a bold and perhaps reckless streak, was letting us know who the boss was even though it was just a month old (volume up)!
Typically, when we go in to count pups at dens, all the pups scurry into the den and remain together there as far back in the den as they can get.
This is the only instance we can recall of a pup walking out to the edge of the den to stand there and growl at us. In other words, this behavior is uncommon.
Why is this behavior rare? We suspect it is because pups that come out of the den to 'fend off' predators or danger probably would be killed pretty readily if predators visited the den. The purpose of the den is to provide protection/shelter should danger approach.
We do not know what this pup's fate was. We think that 2 or 3 pups from this litter of 4 survived so good decent change he was one of the pups who made it but we won’t ever really know.

Greenland sharks can live up to 500 yrs, and scientists may have found out why!🦈 Their metabolism remains constant over time, meaning they don’t age or degenerate like other animals do. But with global temps rising🌡️, how will these Arctic giants adapt?

A female undulate ray on the Isle of Wight’s Solent coast this week! Endangered, undulates have recovered well in the island’s waters, their egg-cases now common on our beaches! A beautiful species of skate to encounter, with awesome markings! #elasmobranch#marinebiodiversity
Genomic tracing was used in a recent study to analyze over 560 white-bellied pangolin samples. This research uncovered the lineage of white-bellied pangolins in western Central Africa and identified the Yaoundé market as the main trading hub in the region. (1/2)
We aim to make sure that national legislation for angel sharks is established, implemented & enforced. In February we attended Fish Forum in Türkiye, engaging with GFCM officials and showcasing the breadth of flat shark conservation work across the Mediterranean. #AngelSharkDay🦈
Happy International #AngelSharkDay! 🦈
Today we celebrate the family Squatinidae, the angel sharks! Amongst the most threatened families of elasmobranchs in the world, we work with our partners in the Angel Shark Conservation Network to profile & better protect them.
