Or you are forgetting that producers and retailers will pass on Yang's sales taxes to consumers in higher prices, and that many people will lose their jobs because of the higher taxes, and that landlords who rent to the poor will demand more.

@scottsantens The drop in retail prices is momentary, because everyone gets dividends at once, so stores try to convince people to make big purchases instead of saving. And rents in Alaska rise and fall with changes in the dividends, so must of that value goes to landlords.

@JamesRobichaux @MatthewDownhour Yes, because UBI in no way decreases the VAT. It also has no direct relationship to the negative externalities of consumption. So it punishes all workers who add value and all consumers who want access to nice things, but it does not tax pollution.

@agr_slrg To partly fund these prizes and to discourage patent trolls (land speculators), we should also ask companies to self-assess the value of their patent privileges. Each year the government would charge a rate (ideally increasing geometrically over time) on that self-assessment.

Follow Henry George's lead with this thought experiment: would the cost of "housing" become any cheaper if houses could be built instantly at zero cost?

The answer is not obvious. There is even good reason to think that rent cost would rise.

In that way, we can say that consumers certainly do face much of VAT's tax incidence.
