Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the 53-year-old pediatrician who directed Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, spoke through his lawyer Nasser Abu Odeh at a hearing before Israel's Supreme Court this week, stating that he is a doctor who provides care to the sick, the wounded and the vulnerable in the Gaza Strip, that he carried out his work in line with international law and humanitarian standards, and that his detention is unjust and arbitrary. He demanded the court order his immediate release. He has now been held for more than 500 days, around 17 months, without charge, after Israeli occupation forces stormed and set fire to Kamal Adwan Hospital on 27 December 2024 and seized him, in an image that became a symbol of the targeting of Gaza's medical system: the doctor walking alone toward Israeli tanks through the rubble of the last functioning hospital in the north, which he had kept running through an 85-day siege.

He appeared on screen handcuffed and shackled, with the court refusing to remove his restraints, looking pale, gaunt and visibly thinner, with lash-like marks on both arms. His lawyer says he is held in solitary confinement at Nafha prison under Israel's so-called "Unlawful Combatant Law," which permits indefinite detention without charge and strips detainees of Geneva Convention protections. Rights groups and his legal team have documented repeated beatings, electric shocks, prolonged solitary confinement, starvation and denial of medical care despite his heart condition. Physicians for Human Rights Israel says fourteen doctors from Gaza remain held in Israeli prisons, and the UN, the World Health Organization, the International Committee of the Red Cross and numerous human rights organisations have repeatedly called for his release. The court postponed its ruling, with a decision on whether his detention continues expected within days.

The human species has essentially been transformed into a giant profit-generating machine for corporations.

Under capitalism, humanity exists to serve the interests of the corporation. We are all livestock; beasts of burden used to carry margin expansion forward from quarterly statement to quarterly statement. Enjoyment of life has no value other than the extent to which it can be used to increase the net worth of the shareholders.

That’s why everyone’s so unhappy. We’re not living with purpose. We’re not working together to build a better world and a better future, we’re just pulling levers to turn gears to make the arrow line go up on the graph in the conference room. It’s a hollow, pointless way for people to live.

It makes our whole culture vapid and soulless.

Music is made to be as profitable as possible, which means giving it the broadest possible appeal using formulaic song structure calculated to cause a chemical response in the largest number of human brains.

Movies are designed to draw the largest possible box office revenue at the lowest possible risk to studios and investors, often by just rehashing a movie that’s already proven successful in the past or by slapping together a story about an IP with pre-existing mass appeal.

Food is made to be fast and addictive rather than nourishing.

Healthy human connection has been commodified as social media intertwines with friendships and dating apps insert themselves into the development of romantic relationships.

Human sexuality is being warped and twisted as internet porn normalizes violence and degradation for the maximum number of clicks.

Attention and engagement have been monetized, creating an information ecosystem dominated by conflict and gossip designed to appeal to our baser instincts.

Advertisement is injected into every possible corner of our waking sensory experience, with any available space where the eye might rest or the ear might listen being flooded with psychological manipulation compelling us to consume. They’ll start running commercials in our dreams the instant they have the technology to do so.

You spend eight hours at the office working to generate corporate profits, then you come home and consume products to profit other corporations. You need your beer and snacks to unwind, your streaming services and social media to distract your mind from the stress of it all, your online clothing purchase to try to feel good about yourself, and your prescription drugs to get to sleep at night. People live their entire lives like this.

And that’s those of us who are lucky enough to be living in the global north. In the global south you get wage slavery and exploitation with far more toil, far less relaxation time, and no cheap products made by impoverished workers on other continents with which to comfort yourself.

All of humanity has been roped into this mess. And for what? To make the numbers in some bank accounts increase. To get some green arrows pointing upward on the stock exchange. To enable a few billionaires to buy islands and elections.

All while destroying the biosphere we all depend on for survival.

This, we are told, is the best possible system we could possibly be living under.

I personally do not believe this is true. I personally believe we can have better. Those who benefit from this current arrangement are going to assure us it’s impossible and do everything they can to stop us from changing it, but we do have the means to reclaim the wealth, dignity and happiness that they have stolen from us.

They built this whole machine on our backs. All we need to do is stand up.

Porkie Pie Politics: National under fire over Fieldays falsehood about Labour

National MP Chris Bishop described an empty site at Fieldays as "barren and vacant", comparing it to Labour's policies for farmers and rural New Zealand. Bishop’s post to social media was a photograph of an empty patch of grass suggesting Labour had failed to show up to New Zealand’s largest agricultural event.

The post may have attracted a lot of engagement, but engagement is not the same thing as credibility.

According to Labour leader Chris Hipkins, the Labour party made a deliberate decision not to operate a stall this year and instead send MPs walking throughout the event to engage directly with farmers, exhibitors and visitors.

Political parties are entitled to criticise each other and National can argue Labour has failed rural communities. Those are legitimate political debates and voters are capable of judging the merits of those arguments for themselves.

What happened at Fieldays was different. Rather than challenging Labour’s policies or record, coalition politicians attempted to build a narrative around an assumption. Once that assumption was proven wrong, the attack collapsed. The irony is that the coalition’s attack may have handed Hipkins an opportunity to demonstrate exactly what it was trying to deny. By explaining that Labour MPs were out talking to people across the event rather than sitting at a single site, he was able to prove the party was actively engaging with rural New Zealand.

Voters can reach their own conclusions about Labour’s agricultural policies and whether the party deserves support in rural New Zealand. What they should also expect is reasoned political debate.

The Fieldays episode is a reminder to the Government that a clever political attack is only effective when the underlying claim is true. In this case, the criticism unravelled because the facts pointed in the opposite direction. Once Hipkins clarified what had actually happened, the empty space that Bishop presented as evidence of Labour’s failure became evidence of something else entirely: the risks of rushing to score political points before establishing the facts.
