There has been so much tragedy this week alone. We are constantly reminded of the urgent need to reimagine public safety. Policing is inherently violent — by design. It was built upon the foundations of white supremacy. The solution is to invest in our communities.

More urgently than ever, our communities need real measures for police accountability so that this kind of violence is prevented. And ultimately, we need to imagine and invest in alternative systems of public safety to our current deadly system of violent, unaccountable policing.

This is not an issue of "bad apples" in police forces. Giving more money to police for "training" on bias and de-escalation wouldn't have stopped them from murdering Daunte Wright. Policing in this country is inherently violent by design.

When our community mourns another senseless loss due to unaccountable police violence, we are met with even more violence—rubber bullets and tear gas—and increased police presence.

Daunte Wright was a 20-year-old Black man, father to a one-year-old son. Yesterday, he was killed by Brooklyn Center police outside Minneapolis at a routine traffic stop, allegedly for the air fresheners hanging from his rearview mirror.
