Long-term project on physiological and behavioral adaptations of king penguins to cope with environmental constraints
Led by @AntoineStier at @IPHC_Strasbourg
Congrats to @camlemnn for her PhD publication in Proc R Soc B @royalsociety on the social vs. genetic programming ofdevelopment and stress physiology in king penguin🐧
Also a real teamwork from people in the field and lab since 2011 inc. @bize_pierre !

The Econergy team is well represented at the French National Committee for Arctic and Antarctic Research, with JP Robin being in the organizing team, @AudeNoiret @camlemnn @AntoineStier/@alewden presenting their research, and JP + @AntoineStier giving a public lecture tonight!
The scientific days of the (French) National Committee for Arctic and Antarctic Research begin in Strasbourg, at the Palais Universitaire, with three days of conferences on the latest updates in French polar science. @CNFRA_France@CNRS#Arctic#Antarctic#Science
We hope the project can continue even if the French Polar Institute disappear, but nothing sure so we have to push back the politicians: please help us and sign the online petition!
Now Elsa (3rd from right) is 'alone' to take care of all the #119 king 🐧 chicks during austral winter, after they have been monitored with love by the 'summer team' (left to right: @NorithEckbo , Samuel Laporte, Elsa Marçon, Zohria-Lys Guillerm). Stay tuned for winter updates!
While part of the @Econergy1 team (inc @NorithEckbo) is now safely back in France, the work is continuing through the austral winter with these cute little chicks thanks to Elsa Marçon @_IPEV @ServiceCivique and the help she gets from other people at the station @TAAFofficiel !
The PI of the project has not been good at getting updates of the field season online, so now that the busy summer season is over, time to catch up!
The team in the field ensured the detailed monitoring of 48 breeding pairs and their chicks as part of a long-term observatory!
Please RT 🐧🇹🇫:
Postdoc position (12 months) to work on king penguin ecophysiology in the context of climate change.
Field trip of 3-6 months is forecasted.
Application DL = 01/09/23
Start date = 01/10/23 or spring 24

We are now past mid-winter 🐧🇹🇫
Chicks that made it until winter (~50%) have to fast for a very long time (up to 5 months) since parents are barely coming back on land to feed them.
This leads to a very unusual growth pattern and extended growth period (~ 300 days!)!
Come to work with us on king 🐧 ecophysiology!
King 🐧 seem to be naturally resilient to acute and chronic stress and we want to explore this with a motivated and fun PhD student!
Fieldwork in Crozet archipelago 🇹🇫, and plenty of data/samples already available in Strasbourg 🇫🇷
Please RT & join us 🐧🔥
🚨 opportunity to work on king penguin as a postdoc fellow!
Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions @MSCActions postdoc fellowships call is launched:

Contact project PI ([email protected]), who got 2 MSCA (2014 & 2019)
The summer season is now over in Crozet archipelago.
@camlemnn, F. Bertile & M. Hoareau are back on the boat heading towards La Réunion.
Marine Montblanc is staying to assess winter survival, performance & physiology of king penguin chicks
Let's prepare the 2023-24 season!
