Purveyor of wisdom about gerontology and geriatric medicine. Love taking care of our older patients. Promoting maintenance of function and quality of life.
I instruct an upper-year undergraduate course on Healthy Aging at @queensu - for one of the assignments, students were asked to create an infographic discussing a common myth about aging. I have permission to share some of the infographics with you... 1/7
Great representation by @RushGeriMed fellows, faculty & alumni @AMDApaltc. The #paltc setting is as important as the hospital & clinic setting, with its own unique challenges and successes. Never stop learning & innovating! #paltc22
Functional status is a key component in medical decision making when caring for older adults. Our faculty, @MBednarczykMD and @RackmanMD review best strategies for #polypharmacy reduction in their @AMDApaltc virtual session.
@AreYouASinger @EartsRob @JamesKirkLives@BrianOFahey1@MartyMakary@FDA@US_FDA@AreYouASinger there has been a good amount of attention given to early treatment. We routinely use monoclonal antibodies (bit less now with omicron) and dexamethasone for early sx. We now also have Paxlovid and molnupiravir coming available. However, prevention is always better.
@EartsRob @JamesKirkLives@BrianOFahey1@MartyMakary@FDA@US_FDA @EartsRob Please post the full citation for that paper so I can read it in its entirety. I still doesn’t think you are interpreting the table correctly. A “negative effectiveness” meaning vaccination INCREASES your chance of infection (vs non-vaccinated) doesn’t make sense.
@EartsRob @JamesKirkLives@BrianOFahey1@MartyMakary@FDA@US_FDA You are interpreting that table incorrectly. The table shows that the longer time from vaccination, the worse the vaccine performs again the Omicron variant. Adding a booster significantly improves vaccine performance against the Omicron & Delta. Those data support vaccination.
To physicians who say children don’t need a Covid-19 vaccine: do you also advocate against other vaccines for diseases that cause fewer pediatric deaths than Covid? How many vaccine preventable deaths makes a vaccine worth it? If you don’t believe in vaccines, why be in medicine?
Spent part of this morning holding the pager 📟 (!!!) while my resident was in the OR
Got a call that our patient was uncooperative with his bedside echo, and asking if we could perhaps order a medication to help him through the study… 🧵
I’ve know @iamwesmoore since college @JohnsHopkins . He’s a smart, talented, and all around good guy. I think he’s a very qualified candidate for Governor and I wish him the best! Good luck, Wes!
I defied the odds to become a Rhodes Scholar, Army officer & CEO.
Now, I'm announcing my run for Maryland Governor.
Because I believe no matter our start—we all deserve an equal opportunity to succeed.
I'd be humbled by your support→ https://t.co/rX4BO0kIyc

@cris_medpr I’m ashamed to hear these comments came from my fellow IM colleagues. I got similar grief for going into #geriatrics. “Why not go into a better paying specialty?” 🙄 I’ve been doing geriatrics for 4 years now & I love it! Screw ‘em! Follow your passion! @RushGeriMed@AMDApaltc
Re: J&J 72% vs Pfizer/Moderna 95% – it's sorta like comparing scores of golfers who teed off during a calm morning to those who teed off at 1pm when winds were howling. While it's hard to make precise adjustment, it's clear that equally good play will result in different scores.
