If you worked in a large public school, you knew pretty quickly COVID was a scam.

The kids were absolutely physically fine. I taught at a school of 2400 at the time. Nobody associated with my school died, and that’s a HUGE total contact list when you count family members (including the vulnerable), parents running businesses and working “essential jobs”, and extended families and friend groups who ignored distancing rules (most of them). The biggest health toll came in the numbers of kids who had migraines by 10:00am from breathing through filthy masks all day.

But COVID did absolutelynhurt kids, just not because of the viral load. What hurt them, exactly?

➡️ The FEAR the schools were engendering in them, though I have to say my senior boys mostly called it all BS and laughed about it all but, man, were they pissed off.

➡️ Being forced out of school for contact with an infected person caused an enormous psychological toll on the hard-working, college-bound high school kids.

The worst harm though?

➡️ The grade inflation the district pushed because “trauma.” They trained kids and families that attendance at school and consistent completion of work was optional and carried few to no serious consequences.

I begged the school board at a public meeting to give me all the kids whose parents wanted them in class every day and stick me in an auditorium or the quad and I’d teach their english and history classes. I offered o teach outdoors at a public park if they wanted. I didn’t care how many different preps it was. I didn’t care if the auditorium was full. I would’ve taken it on.

I’m sure you won’t be surprised to find out the school board blew me off completely.

As to Mr. Carolla’s question: Why did people miss it?

Because it took knowledge of history, a scientist’s will to observe and seek out data to figure out what was happening across a large campus, and hypothesize based on the evidence at hand. Then, a willingness to ask uncomfortable questions to see to what extent the virus was causing significant harm to the kids (until the vaccine rolled out, then athletes started having to quit their varsity teams and kids started being diagnosed with long covid) and, most importantly, the courage to experiment with options that could cause less harm. Oh, and you also had to be highly skeptical of the media. (Thanks, Great Financial Crisis of 2008!)

All of those qualities were already being actively disincentivized by the public
K-12 system by 2020, well in advance of COVID, especially in school administrators.

COVID accelerated their training and added a credentialing program for every family.

Now, all the schools are suffering from long covid; the evidence is in the number of families now choosing to “social distance” from their local brick and mortar school.

Me: “It wouldn’t kill towns to loosen zoning restrictions a bit so you don’t have to have 5 acres and 500 feet of road frontage to build a house.”

Them: “So you think people should open strip clubs and toxic waste dumps in residential neighborhoods??”

Me: “If we did away with teacher pensions and just made a $500/mo S&P contribution on their behalf, it would save the district money and their retirement income would be 3-4X higher than they get from a pension.”

Them: “Why Do You Hate Teachers??!”
