According to the Sault Star, police were called to a domestic incident at one of the two shooting locations “in the days previous” to Monday’s mass shooting.
The Sault Star has identified the shooter in the Sault Ste. Marie murders as Bob Thomas Hallaert, reporting his ex-wife is still alive, but seriously injured.
Hallaert shot his girlfriend, his ex-wife and their three children before killing himself.

@JackieAGraham Reddit is genuinely good at a lot of things in how it handles live news — better even at some elements of it than Twitter ever was — but it v. much doesn't have the pulse that made this site essential.
@rob_siglio Live sports and live news are what made this site part of my daily routine long before I used it as a content-producing platform.
Now, it's bad at all three.
Hurricane #Otis made landfall near #Acapulco, Mexico early this morning as a Category 5 hurricane. That's bad enough, but just 24 hours prior, it was a tropical storm and was forecast to make landfall as a tropical storm. Not even a hurricane warning a day in advance... [1/2]
Intimate partner violence is one of our most common causes of deliberate murder — but this kind of reflexive secrecy also makes it the most difficult type of homicide to report on and study.
It really should not be that way.
This is not to single out police in The Soo but I strongly believe police need to rethink their stance of not identifying victims of intimate partner violence.
Without knowing who died and why, these incidents never get the public scrutiny they v. much need to be subjected to.
The shooter, a 44-year-old, was also located deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
As these incidents are the result of intimate partner violence, the names of the accused and victims are not being released.
... which leaves far fewer avenues to report on the details of what happened.
And when five people die in what police describe as an act of deliberate murder, I strongly believe it is in the public interest to have a full public airing of what happened.
