#Multilateralism is also built from the local level: through cooperation networks, territorial alliances, and the international action of subnational governments.

#Paradiplomacy is not a complement—it’s part of the solution. It brings global agendas closer to citizens, making them more tangible, diverse, and effective.

#UCLGMeets Today’s meeting addressed key issues regarding the future of our institutions, highlighting that the current global crisis demands more agile and transparent ways of cooperation👇

1️⃣ The international system is changing and traditional institutions are no longer enough. #Plurilateralism is proposed as the way to move from words to action.

2️⃣ As @UCLG_Saiz rightly pointed out: "Our mission is to humanize global governance. It is not just about managing cities, but about protecting civic space and ensuring that democracy is the antidote to fear and polarization".

3️⃣ What does this mean in practice? #LRGs do not wait for permission. @SalaCarola emphasized that "#Plurilateralism provides us with the agility and ambition needed to build coalitions that solve urgent problems, from the neighborhood to the world".

4️⃣ For these alliances to work, #JosephForti proposes three basic pillars:
✅ Clear goals: Actions with specific deadlines.
✅ External oversight: Independent evaluation by citizens.
✅ Accountability: Real consequences if results are not achieved.

5️⃣ The ultimate goal is a governance where human dignity is the limit of any power. Global transformation starts locally! 🌍🤝@uclg_org

#UCLGMeets: La jornada de hoy abordó temas clave sobre el futuro de nuestras instituciones, destacando que la crisis global actual exige formas de cooperación más ágiles y transparentes👇

1️⃣ El sistema internacional está cambiando y las instituciones tradicionales ya no alcanzan. Se propone el #plurilateralismo como vía para pasar de las palabras a la acción.

2️⃣ @UCLG_Saiz señaló: "Nuestra misión es humanizar la gobernanza global. No se trata solo de gestionar ciudades, sino de proteger el espacio cívico y garantizar que la democracia sea el antídoto frente al miedo y la polarización”.

3️⃣ ¿Qué significa esto en la práctica? Los #LRGs no esperan un permiso para actuar. @SalaCarola remarcó que "El plurilateralismo nos brinda la agilidad y ambición necesarias para construir coaliciones que resuelvan problemas urgentes, del barrio al mundo".

4️⃣ Para que estas alianzas funcionen, #JosephForti propone tres pilares básicos:
✅ Metas claras: acciones con plazos concretos.
✅ Supervisión externa: evaluación independiente por parte de la ciudadanía.
✅ Rendición de cuentas: consecuencias reales si no se logran resultados.

5️⃣ El objetivo final: una gobernanza donde la dignidad humana sea el límite de todo poder.

Today, during a rich and forward-looking debate with the @globaltaskforce, focused on the future and the implementation of the #Agenda2030, we heard a powerful call from @UCLG_Saiz to step up and take the lead:

🗣️“We need to make sure that multilateralism works and that we are part of the renewal of the multilateral system.”

She also urged us to think beyond the current framework and engage in the follow-up of the global agenda:

🗣️ “What comes next? What happens after the SDG's? 2030 is around the corner.”

A timely reminder that local and regional governments must not only implement the agenda — but actively shape what comes after it.

🌍 Rumbo a 2026: Inicia en Barcelona la ruta de los “100 días de multilateralismo local”

Día 2 del Retiro Anual de @uclg_org: Bajo el lema “100 días de multilateralismo local”, se pone en marcha un proceso estratégico diseñado para unificar la voz de los gobiernos locales y regionales en la arena internacional, en el Hotel Catalonia Barcelona Plaza.

📌 En busca de un trayecto común hacia la Agenda post-2030, este ciclo conecta hitos clave: #WUF13, Congreso Mundial de CGLU, 10 años de la #NUA, el #HLPF con revisión del #ODS 11, #COP31 en Turquía y U20 Summit en New York, para co-crear una hoja de ruta y fortalecer la incidencia de ciudades y regiones en el tramo final de la #Agenda2030 y el marco post-2030.

🌍 Road to 2026: The “100 Days of Local Multilateralism” Process Begins in Barcelona

Day 2 of the @uclg_org Annual Retreat. Under the theme “100 Days of Local Multilateralism,” a strategic process is launched to unify the voice of local and regional governments in the international arena at the Hotel Catalonia Barcelona Plaza.

📌 A shared path toward the post-2030 agenda: this cycle links key milestones (#WUF13, the UCLG World Congress, the 10-year review of the #NUA, the 2026 #HLPF including the review of #SDGs 11, #COP31 in Türkiye, and the U20 Summit in New York) to co-create a shared roadmap towards the end of the #2030Agenda and the post-2030 framework.

Under the motto “Local Multilateralism HOPE and OBJECTIVE: A local and territorial vision for the world”, this year’s Retreat seeks to bring multilateralism closer to people and reaffirm local and regional governments as central actors in shaping the global agenda.
Local and Regional Governments (LRGs) will gather this week, from February 23 to 27, to align priorities in a strategic year to influence the future of multilateralism beyond 2030.
