Dangote Refinery's IPO opened today and honestly, it exposed something Nigeria's capital market can't keep ignoring.
@cowrywise , @investbamboo , @iinvestng and a few other fintech and investment apps crashed under the demand. Meanwhile @cardinalstone ‘s CS Alpha ,the platform i also use held up fine with no crash.
@hisanigeria also handled the traffic well from what I've seen, almost nobody had issues getting their trades through there either. Others ran into issues with a couple of other platforms today too, so this wasn't only a fintech problem.
This can't be brushed off as a one-off. In mature, high-liquidity markets which Nigeria is clearly working towards becoming one,you simply cannot afford minutes or hours of platform downtime. In those markets, that kind of delay can decide whether you get the price you wanted, whether you get into a position in time, or whether you get out before a major event moves against you. As Nigeria's market matures and moves faster, this level of reliability stops being optional.
These apps are also where a lot of people keep their savings. So when they crash, it's not just "annoying" people are literally locked out of their own money when they might need it most. Today my main goal opening bamboo was to withdraw money but I can’t.
And here's the number that makes this sting more: Nigeria has about 6 million registered CSCS accounts, but only around 10% (roughly 600,000) are actually active. In a country of 250 million people, with well over 100 million already using mobile/internet banking, that gap between "banked" and "actually investing" is huge. If we're serious about closing it, platforms crashing under real demand is exactly the wrong look.
Yes, this is the first time Nigeria has seen an offer this big, so some strain was maybe expected. But "first time" isn't an excuse this should've been anticipated and prepared for, not something we're learning the hard way in real time.
Dangote Refinery won't be the last mega-listing on NGX. Fintechs and traditional stockbrokers both need to take this seriously and build for the next big one whether that's another Dangote-linked offer or any other major private company going public. Reliability under pressure needs to be the baseline, not a pleasant surprise.
To be clear I'm not endorsing the platforms I mentioned as holding up well today, and I'm not dragging the ones that had issues either. This isn't about any single platform, it's a general call for better efficiency and reliability across the board.
If you experienced bad service on any platform today, please be patient but also don't stay quiet about it. Write to your broker or fintech's customer support and let them know exactly what happened and how it affected you. And if you can, get others who had the same experience to do the same. The more people who formally flag this, the more likely it actually gets fixed and reduces future problems.
@Thechat101 SAS is such a liar. After he confronted you at the game, you immediately addressed it on ESPN and your podcast, then said you would have swung on him and then moved on to other shows to continue to address it before he went on the Pat McAfee show to diss you.
I'll also say this publicly for everyone to see exactly where I stand on the issue of 2027.
P.O. is the single biggest roadblock to mounting a challenge that has any chance of succeeding in 2027. The simple reason is that he has REFUSED TO DECLARE what he wants to do and where he stands.
Does he want to run independently like in 2023, or does he want to work with the so-called coalition to oust Tinubu 20 months from now? Nobody knows. Not the coalition, not the people around him, and I suspect, not even he himself.
The worst possible outcome between now and 2027 is for him to keep dilly dallying and telling contradictory things to different people, so that when this supposed coalition finally emerges, he will now announce announce 13 months to the election that he will run independently, and then we end up with another split opposition like last time out.
I care about Nigeria and its future WAYYYY more than I care about Peter Gregory Obi, so anyone who has his ear should better tell him to come out and declare where he stands and what he wants to do, so that we can collectively chart a path forward. One man's political gamesmanship or lack of resolve, or indecision, or whatever the fok this is cannot be what keeps us inside the US State Department’s national jail for another 4 years of our productive lives.
We all have hopes and dreams which are collectively more important than any one man. If he wants to run alone, he should declare it NOW so that the country can back him. If he wants to work with the rest of the opposition, he should also come out and SAY SO OPENLY.
And if he is not ready to act like the leader that is needed at this moment in history, he should kindly step away and let a more resolute person take the wheel.
This is not a fucking game.
@UseLemfi I have been sending emails with no response. Tickets have been raised but no additional responses. I made a transfer and requested a cancellation. I need the value refunded into my account but I got only one vague response which appeared automated. Kindly respond asap
my money @GiGLogistics was literally seconds away and i went with the worst possible option. Yesterday I called to request info from the customer service and they assured me it would be delivered later in the day yesterday, but today I am still waiting for it to be delivered.
