One major concern I still have about social media sites is the "gatekeeper" effect. You see this in all news media, but Twitter and FB are not news, they are forums. If they start banning people we don't like it becomes concerning. The balance is weird #unboundeq
@HollaUwindsor@schro112@Parex05081344 I imagine teachers are going to have a hard time justifying to their students the virtues of memorizing the multiplication table. Students aren't dumb and will push back against what they will see as unnecessary
@mrpopel It is a problem that the Legal system is probably 100x slower than the pace of technology. When the law is playing catch up, then there is no way to protect our privacy rights (4th, Amendment in US, Section 8 in Canada)
There is now almost a stigma of being against technology creeping into our lives. I love the media it brings but the connectivity I don't think is wholly a positive. If you start suggesting this though people think you are this guy in a cabin in the mountains #unboundeq
@HollaUwindsor@schro112@Parex05081344 I wonder though how this will influence culture? I will intentionally spell things the Canadian way, but I would bet money that the students you're talking about would't care. But that raises the question of does it matter if it is spelt colour, or color?
My only worry about Twitter and other social media is that it creates "slacktivism" here. People think they are being edgy and socially conscious by turning their profile picture into a rainbow or a French Flag. Actual physical activism is necessary to create change #unboundeq
@cbelcher13 It is weird though. I feel self-conscious about using my phone is public spaces, but I don't about reading a physical newspaper or book. Except that when I am on my phone in public, 95% of the time I am reading the news or an ebook
